I found this interesting and thought I would share the link on this thread.

I know I am not the only one that wished the poultry industry's big feed producers/mills would offer us at least a choice for ANIMAL PROTEIN to be put back into our feed!

maybe we need a petition of sorts directed at some major players like Nutrena, Purina, Star Mills & Cargill.

i had the same argument. it is the f.d.a. over mad cow

My New Hampshire chicks are now 4 wks old, and am amazed at how fast they are growing, and how beautiful they are. Three Jubilee Orpingtons were hatched in the same group; their parents are quite large English birds, and my NH babies are much larger with more feathering. They are the progeny of Walt's birds, and am grateful to be able to have them. Thank you very much, Walt !!!

Couple of days ago, there was a conversation about the size of NH eggs. The eggs Walt gave me were large in size, and when the babies were born, they were the same size as the Orpingtons, and the Orpingtons' parents lay extra large eggs.

They are very calm, easy to handle, unusually heavy babies with cadmium yellow big feet.

It is difficult to see that they are standing right in front of a regular size 7up can. These babies are surprisingly large..

I wholeheartedly agree!

I am one of those breeders who feel animal protein is critical for poultry to thrive. I had a very long discussion several years ago with a feed specialist at Southern States about this topic, and after about a half an hour of him dancing around my questions, giving me the party line, he finally admitted that his company would never make a feed that was geared towards the small fancier (backyarder, hobbiest, whatever.)

He insisted that synthetic amino acids were an adequate replacement for natural ones, which has not been my experience. Synthetic Methionine in particular, just doesn't compare to that found in animal proteins.

Their mission was to make feed for the large broiler and egg production houses, which contained the minimum amounts of nutrients needed for those places to make a profit. They just don't care about folks like us, we don't make a big enough dent in their bottom line. So while we can ask, I don't think any of the big feed companies will listen, sadly.

I add a little catfish feed in my chicken feed every now and then to boost the proteine. My chickens love it!
FORTUNATELY, so far, my local feed mill still uses animal protein. Occasionally I do supplement protein as well by adding dry cat food (31% protein and definitely animal based)....we have no cats anymore but my wife picks up a large bag any time she sees them on sale
