Quote: I AM a product of the Pacific Northwest a group from Centralia Washington. There are still some great people out there who can help the beginner. They don't come on this thread or this site however. Most work and are breeders and go to a few of the good shows lieft in the region. Also, they head down to Northern Calif and there are some wonderful people there and birds as well.
The number one investment to search these folks out is type in the breed you are looking for on Google and bird dog and find them if you can. Also, subscribe to Poultry Press magazine they have every show in the USA on the pages advertised by those clubs. Next is join the American Poultry Association as their year book will show who is showing and winning to some degree and the good shows and the breeders advertise in there as well. Don't crack open any eggs you can rattle them as here they are no chicks in them or hold them up to a strong flash light at seven to ten days to see if they are fertile. I have ordered a good Candler from a company so I just hold the egg to the light and in one second there is a chick or not then on the eighteenth day in the little Styr foam or wooden home made hatcher and removed and toe punched on the 22 day.

Glad to here you are from near the Birmingham area who wants Silver Capines. I hope to attend the first Mississippi show in October and again the big large fowl show at Pensacola Floria in December then Newnan Georgia show in Feb in Georgia. all great shows to be for large fowl down the road. bob

You are right as usual Bob. There are plenty of good breeders left in the PNW. They just don't go online.
There are plenty of shows in CA with 1500 or more birds. The Pacific Poultry Breeders (Stockton, CA) has 3-4000 bird shows the last weekend of January.. For some reason folks think all the action in poultry is online...not so!

no cracking the egg is fine .... then you put the egg into a frying pan and whala no waisted egg. It sounds to me as if you are waiting / looking for the time the previous roosters sperm has been cleared and NOT looking to hatch more from the previous rooster.

Making sour milk from non-fat dry milk .

Hi,
I have been reading how sour skim milk is good for growing poultry. I also found out non-fat dried milk
is good for poultry. I found out it's possible to make quality sour milk from dried skim milk. Now to bring
the whole thing full circle....is it possible t make a quality sour milk from non-fat dried milk and have to
be good for the poultry? How do I make sour milk? Can I use a yogurt maker? How do I do it and
how long does it have to sour and how do I tell if it is ready to feed or not?
Thanks for your help!
Best,
Karen

Hello Karen,

I have a home dairy. I make clabbered/sour milk for my chickens daily from fresh RAW whole milk. Pasteurized and homogenized milk does not sour properly, but putrifies or rots due to the lack of beneficial bacteria that fresh raw milk has.

What I do is milk the goats and leave it out for 24-48 hours until solids begin to appear that's how to separate the curds from the whey.

I usually feed both unless I want to use the whey for any particular recipe. My flock loves it, are healthy and their feathers glisten in the sun.

Fwhew. Had no idea it'd be so busy, and I gotta run here in a min. If you are aiming at 'clearing' one Ckl genetics vs. selling those eggs, why not crack 'em open? We can eat 8 a morning around here, why not just crack they day they're laid and eat, vs. leave long enough to see development or not? That bullseye is pretty determinative... :)

As far as going to an APA etc. show, I live in Port Hadlock and have 2 very small children and my husband makes 13.50/hr.... I'm not traveling hundreds of miles on passion alone, my friends. I can occassionally head to Seattle, but only on serious budgeting and combining lots of errands to justify. How the hey do I justify a trip E of that, and a hotel stay, most likely. Not happening. Back in the daydream bag. Now, If I can bribe someone with my future HRIR hatches or something to find me a couple of contacts at one of those shows, do please PM me!!

I will try to hunt down Canadian guru as suggested :)
Gotta go, Thanks all... still haven't read the rest of this thread today!
Emily Robertson in southern British Columbia. She is part of TruNorth Heritage Poultry. (website) Emily does bring birds and eggs south to the USA. She breeds Light Sussex. Uses Canadian and English strains.
Uses population genetics to breed for utility. TruNorth also shows the birds and they win. If you are looking for a Heritage breed which can win in APA shows
and produce like it was historically bred to do, TruNorth has fine birds in that regard.
Best,
Karen

Crack open?

There are lots of fantastic and serious dedicated breeders in the NW. You just won't find most of them on here. Or on the Internet in general. County fairs are kind of nothing (that's why when someone advertises show quality and mentions wins, it's a good idea to find out if its just at fairs or at real shows).

Both Washington Feather Fanciers and Pacific Northwest Poultry Association put on two shows every year, and there's a show put on every June at Mother Earth News event. Attend those and I think you'll find more of what you're seeking.

I'm thinking I should just crack open eggs after a week or so, see if they still are fertile,

Is there any particular reason you could not candle the eggs to check fertility?

Would this work with raw cows milk how much for 10 two month olds?
Yes, the same for raw cow's milk or any type of raw milk. Yak, mule LOL

If they've never had it before, they are skeptical but after they drink it - they'll be hooked. I feed at any age. Place a bowl in front of them and see how much they consume in ~5 minutes, that should be good gage as to how much to clabber for them. I have a large flock and pour out buckets full which is pretty much consumed by the time I get back to the house.
