Jenjscott, does your prior note on your barred holland signify that you are adopting them as your breed? That would be special. I wonder if there's a single other farm dedicated to them.

Roy one thing on your web site it says you have New Hampshire reds there is no such breed only New Hampshires you probably know this already but I thought I'd point it out........
nice birds tho
punky

Thanks Punky
Feathers already pointed this out to me and it is just one of the many changes my web master is making this week. However, if you look far enough back in the history of New Hamps you will find that they were originally call New Hampshire Reds. At any point, they are awesome breed and it is a sham that they have slipped to almost being gone from the poultry scene.

Well, he still has that WILD hen and chicks running loose on his website. Can't even move my mouse without them chasing me! Sure is cute! Website is looking great too! Just read elsewhere that Roy is now the President of the new Java Breeders club! Congradulations Roy!

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Roy J. Autrey as president of the Java Breeders of America Chicken Club. Although the club was only started a month ago we already have 8 members and the group has been fun and educational. Our web site is booming! Please join our club it is free. We would like to increase Javas presence everywhere. We are listed for all of 2011 in the Exhibition Poultry Magazine. It is free to download from their website. www.exhibitionpoultry.net

Well, I always jump in over my head. I have Buckeye large fowl(almost 2 years) and Barred Holland hatched first eggs this spring) and Japanese Bantams. Hope I don't drown.

Moved my Dark Brahma from the snow bank into my breeding coop today and took a few pics.

Well, I hate to say anything to influence you, choice of breed is always personal, but I'm intrigued that Barred Holland seem to have spoken to you. Among the composite breeds, they are among the very rarest.

Yes! Excellent book. If anyone has difficulty settling into an on=line book, this book is available in written form. It was republished in 2003. Here's the ISBN: 1585748145. The cost is 14.95. This book is an excellent tool For anyone beginning to consider breeding poultry properly, it's a great way to learn the principles and terminology.

The first three chapters set to stage:

Chapter I: Principles of Breeding
Chapter II: Practices of Breeding
Chapter III: Breeding for Increased Production

The following chapters are divided into the various classes of poultry with a discussion of each breed in that class included in the Standard by the time of this book's original publication. It goes over each breed meticulously, offering ideas for pairings and faults about which one should be aware on account of the breeding tendencies in each breed current at the time publication.

One of the better aspects of this text is that it really a compendium of the knowledge of the day. In the introduction, there is a long list of names mentioned as sources who had contributed information about the breeds. Therein are some of the greats of the day. There is a total of 81 breeders listed as information contributors.

Rocks and Reds are discussed in great detail as are Dorkings and La Fleche and everything in between!

It would make a great reference tool for the group as a whole, indeed, it could be used as a springboard for conversation.
