Regarding feed with animal protein - I like the Kent feed, and I also really like Buckeye brand "layer/breeder pellets" - it has a bit higher protein than Purina, and has animal protein in it.

I also use a mix of Cod Liver Oil, Red Cell, and Fortified Wheat Germ Oil (1:1:4) in a spray bottle, and I sprits 1 or 2 full sprays on a pan of layer pellets each morning during breeding season. I found, after starting this, that my stock feathered out more quickly after molting, have a nice sheen to their feathers, and most importantly for me, hatchability increased.

I travel about 45 miles to get my ADM feed. There 20% is called Egg balancer and it is big crumbles. They call it pellets I call it crumbles. It cost me $13 for a bag so I get two or there scratch which is not bad. Another thing one can do is make there own protien by raising mealworms or crickets. The mealworms are easy no mesh or fuss. But then again if you have alot of chickens you would need alot of them. At least they are cheap. We have a number of threads in the feed section on raising them and other bugs for feed.

Kent has three names that go with it. All made by same company but different names and sold in different places. I can not remember the other names will look them up.

Cyber, I've often thought about raising mealworms but it would be a huge endeavor to raise as many as I would need....sigh...gosh, the chooks would sure love them, though! I may reconsider raising them...thanks.

Wynette,

Both Kent and Buckeye are very good feeds. I have always liked Buckeye Feed. (For pullets) I use there 18% Starter on chicks up to around 10 then switch them to Big 4 until I get there first egg then I put them on Layer/Breeder. (For cockerels) I use there 18% Starter on chicks up to around 10 then switch them to Big 4 until about a year then I start to mix in a good all grain Pigeon Feed with the Big 4 to bring the protein down to around 18%.

My favorite source of animal protein in the spring, summer and early fall is whey from cheesemaking. When we dry off the last of the does, I start picking out a big bucket of meat trimmings and scraps from the local butcher for the birds.

I wouldn't know where to find CLO in this area, but sure wish I did; none of the feed stores or pharmacies carry it anymore.

The 3 sister Co. are Kent, Blue Seal and Evergreen Mills ..

At one time I used ADM and if I remember right they are a Alliance of MoorMan's, , Supersweet, Tindle, Master Mix, and Consolidated Feeds.

Liquid 32oz.

Thank you Chris I could not remember. There are way too many feed that are plant only. It is cheaper to make or it is that whole veggi thing. Most feeds are far from what I would call complete and should be supplemented with meat protien or free ranging.

I here that.
I used Kalmbach Feeds (there 1044) for some time and when I started using it they had Meat protein in it and was a good feed, now they have a all plant protein mix (no animal protein) and call it a,
"All Natural" mix and IMO no where as good.

Well needless to say, I dropped them just as soon as I seen the ingredient change.

Most if not all of Purina poultry feeds are plant proteins too.It seems there is more money in putting the meat into cat and dog feed.Hence I buy dog and cat food as a suppliment for the hens.
