I would fight you for the deer liver and heart...

We have a mound of compost from the coops, and rabbits, and it has ba-zillions of nightcrawlers and red worms in it, inches from the surface year round...unless it gets very dry in deep summer, we have to wet the compost down to keep the microbes going.
But, every day I am home I open the run gate to 1 pen, and the birds run to the garden/compost in the center common area.
There they turn the compost, and eat thousands of night crawlers.
I thought you all down south had great night crawlers too ?
I used to buy worms and crickets from the cricket man...the birds loved them !!
We bought the crisckets for our bullfrogs, but if one escaped the bullfrogs, they would be feed for the chickens, or a song to sing to sleep at night.

Is this safe for those of us with "city water" to use, or is it not-necessary? I would think it would hinder the growth of anything in the water, but perhaps "too much" chlorine??

Thanks

Again sorry,,,newbie do you cook these as someone stated you need to cook..was that pig or beef trimmers...? thanks

i would not cook any meat or animal products before feeding it to chickens... IMO cooking them destroys some of the ameno(sp?) and fatty acids and other things... i read an article about that along time ago but now don't remember the details... just be careful to only feed out what they can eat in a few hours... fly maggots can kill chickens if not fed right

Morning all....my first hatch is COMPLETE. Hatched 3 for 3 of my Columbian Rock LF from the Canadian trio!! Last one just hatched and is drying off. Will be placing them in the brooder by lunchtime. I also hatched 7 for 9 of the line from Ohio...giving these to a friend to work with.

I candled 9 yesterday that were at the 1 week stage and all are developing nicely. Also set an additional 6 yesterday. These 15 are all from the trio.

Once all these hatch, I'll be setting up individual breeding pens so I can keep up with dam of each hatch. I wanted to get some numbers on the ground first, just to make sure I had something growing out in the event something happened to the parents

I will also be mating the Canadian cockerel to the best two pullets (for size, shape, color, undercolor and tail) from the Ohio strain in order to develop a little genetic diversity.

So far, things are looking good for 2011. Praying for an early and PROLONGED Spring. Not looking forward to Summer at all, BUT, winter can head on outta here.

Have a great day!

If you cannot deal with raw meat, then cooking it is okay.Just remember to give them this stuff in amounts they will clean up and then be careful to clean the dishes if they are used. You have to be careful in the summer as the meat can become rotten and that will result in limberneck-food poision.I have always found the birds of all ages do better with some meat in the diet.I have been told that beef tallow (fat cakes) are good if available.

Bob,

I have always been told that a male with white frosting on the claret breast feathers will give you pullets with better penciling...I do know that frosting on the black triangle under the tail of a male call will kill your color under the tail of a pullet. I look at the males background color when he is in eclipse..

Here is a link to Patty Pickards site that talks about breeding Grays...I believe that Jim Konecny actually wrote this and took the pictures..

I apologize for getting so off topic on this thread....

Bob I have to agree with Turbo 100% on the male breast feathers and penciling. It will set the penciling and improve it in your hen line.
I put a post on page 294 about this very thing in regards to Dark Brahma and any penciled pattern. Penciling is a very challenging pattern to work with. I would suggest reading up on Large Fowl chicken penciling.
Here is the previous post. https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=400344&p=294

Good
luck with the birds
