We were in the upper 90's and 100's for two months straight this year. It was tough on the birds. My marans basically STOPPED laying. I thought the leghorns were going to have a heat stroke. Shockingly, the wyandotte and EE's took the heat the best.

I do want a friendly bird, BUT I need to be sure it can take the heat without being babied.

Joletabey is in NC. Does anybody live where the summers are more intense and have Delawares ? How did they take the summer heat ? ?

My marans pretty much stopped over the summer, as did the Ameraucanas. The blue rocks just kept on laying like the good little girls they are. If it wasnt for them, I wouldnt have had any eggs at all.

math ace... i have one delaware pullet... she is the friendliest bird i have... and we live just down 95 from you ... she handled the heat just fine this "summer" ...

we got her from "thepamperedpullet" https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/profile.php?id=16662 over in ocala... we love their dellies... and have a couple more chicks from them that we got at their poultry swap recently

I'm considering getting a new breed and i think I'm between Ameraucana, Chantecler or Dorking are these considered heritage breeds?

thanks punky

All my pullets did better with the heat than the hens did. . . . . The older girls seem to have a more difficult time with the heat than the younger girls. . . Keep in touch with me and let me know how your delaware pullet does next summer . . .

Thanks for the heads up on the source for delawares. I've met them last year at the chicken show in North Florida. There are some nice folks with chickens in the Ocala area.

Here is a pair of Partridge Plymouth Rocks that came from Dick Horstman From Penn. Dick has some pretty good birds and provides eggs and chicks to customers. They are very freindly, and do not charge you our your children. They also, lay very well for my freind who has them. bob

Joel has good chickens in all breeds and colors that he has. He also has very good Heartage Rhode Island Red Large Fowl. When you go to the fair you really do not have to ask permission to take a picture of a good bird. Take pictures of other breeds you see ask the show Secetary for a list of exibitors so you can contact them latter. In regards to the feathers being loose on the barred Rocks they are still very young. However, that is a fault of many strains of Barred Rocks today. What you have to remember is just becasue the breed is a Heartage Breed it may not be at the level you saw 40 or 50 years ago. Many of these breeds and colors are almost gone. They have to be improved by selection. Increasing the egg production will help make the feathers with better webbing. Some of our White Plymouth Rocks look big but they are loose featheredaswell. Another thing we can do to help each other is if you have a video camera take a 45 second vidion of each chicken that you are filming at a show. You can go from one coop to another and when you have a 30 to 45 minute vidio you can put it on a DVD. You could make copies and then share it with your friends on the board.

Here is a question from me. Do many of you have accounts with U-Tube where we could put a video of a short clip of our birds. I want to get a account with them and start posting pictures of my birds and ducks.Do you have to have special software or a fast computer? Have fun at the Fairs. bob
