To me the easiest and least expensive method would be to buy some pigeon "entries"/doors....not sure what they call them. They are a bunch of rods that only move inward. Just make a box for them to lay in and put this door on the front. They can go in and they can't go out. You let them out and make any notes you need to make. I think this set up will work well with what you want to do. Some of the trap nests I have seen are like an engineers nightmare. The pigeon door can be mounted on anything.

There just called traps or bob traps. I have a few that I was going to use on a trap-nest for hens but never got to it.
Here is a link to a trap.

These would also work there rodless bobs

Chris,

How does the rodless bob work? The bob track I am guessing requires box to be built which will give lots of flexibility in term of how whole fits into coop wall.

Could you use you bobs so yo can tell me what you think?

AND HAVE YOU USED THE BLUE BARRELS WITH TEATHERS FOR ROOSTERS? This summer I want setup trial to use with hens that are to be teathered and rooster to be free. Flock mating will then be possible with confidence of dam's ID. Never used teathers except for short confinement of brood cocks and they ended up roosting on tractor tires or in doghouse.

Owens - read "The Call of The Hen" ... it's available free online through google books, or many libraries have a copy. It's an oldie, but great book if you're looking into culling for production. Great information in there on capacity and other traits that contribute to egg laying. Four-six fingers would be good for a LF hen that's laying consistently, but a pullet may start out with just two fingers and move up to three or four her first year.

six fingers? Um, isn't that about the size of human cervix fully dilated ready to give birth?
