thank you.

is the SOP description of a breed very different from what one would find in the APA description of a breed?

This is what i think the answer is. correct me if i am wrong, please:

The SOP description is more specific than the APA description. The SOP is describing the traits desired for a bird to be SQ; whereas the APA description is giving broader parameters for a breed in general. In other words, individuals of this breed should possess these qualities if they would be truly representative of the breed, even if they are not in fact, SQ birds. Not every authentic RIR or BR, for example is SQ, even though each bird may in fact be a true example of its breed.

The above is my quick answer to the question i have in the top line.

Do you knowledgeable ones think it is substantially correct, OR...............?

tx again!

It is my understanding that the APA is the one who publishes the SOP. Or at least thats the way it appears on my book. My "American Standard of Perfection" came directly from the APA

Hope my understanding is correct

Can you "experts" validate please??!!

thanks.

after i put up that question i had a thought, 'oh no, i think the apa's description and the sop are one and the same'. i actually have a little 'problem' with this fact, which i may post later..............

tx again...for your patience

i really feel like i am intruding upon your serious discussion in this thread.

After over 30 years of exhibition poultry, I still ask some stupid questions. But then I learned in college, the only stupid question is teh one we fail to ask. Bob started this thread to help education newbies to Heritage and Exhibition Poultry. So no question is dumb and all questions are welcome on this thread. Your question allowed us to provide a link to the APA website and a way for you to acquire a copy of the SOP.

Noone is intruding upon anyone on this thread. Post your question and someone should be able to answer it.

I have bred and exhibited Buff Orpington Bantams since 1982. Large fowl Orpingtons is not new to me, but I am not as versed on them. Colors other than Buff I am a bit rusty on. So I ask a lot of questions of those who know more than I. On the Lamona Project I ask a LOT of questions. Until this year I had never seen a live Lamona. Now we have several. Many have emailed with helpful information concerning the Lamonas.

So keep asking those questions. Someone will try to answer them all. Between all of us we will have your answers!

here is a question I got last night on my cell phone. When do I start to cull my plymouth rocks for color. I asked how old are they. Three months old.

Answer is not this weekend. You got to wait till they get to crowing age for males and the females are about five months old.

My best advice is in your first year as a beginner dont worry to much about color type is more important and vigor. You could make a big mistake and get rid of a bird who you think may not be good but is.

My experience about 15 years ago. I sold a couple 8 R I Red ckls and two white rock ckls. I figured I would keep the pullets and hens and then get some new males from the Washington area and then have two of them shiped to me for breeding kind of a early out cross for fresh blood.

I took a plane out to seattle and saw my friend Jim who gave me my start, I vidio taped his young birds and then 15 chicks he got from a friend from out east who had the top strain in the USA.

After I went home I was watching the vidios of the birds on my Dads TV and then I showed my dad my vidio of my White Rocks and he said. Your White Rocks look better. Her is a guy who is not a expert about chickens except putting them in the frezzer.

I went home and looked at the vidios again and then went out and saw my birds and said I made a big mistake. I am screwed as I dont want any of those birds that I saw some of them had type like a wyandotte. or they had no fronts on them.

Then about a hour latter the phone rang and it was the lady who I sold my culls to. She said you got any big roosters for sell?? I said a few about six. I asked buy any chance do you have any of those white rock roosters laying around . She said yes we have both of them. They where just to pretty to KILL.

I said I will make a deal with you. I will give you two roosters for one of the white ones. She said you got a deal. So a hour latter they pulled into my drive way with the cage in the trunk of the car and there whre my two big males.

I put them in the mating pens that winter and never did this again. If I was not sure I would hold them over a year and see how they molted out.

That was many years ago and it shows you we can make mistakes and ask stupid question. But the lesson is we must learn from our mistakes.

I still make mistakes and still battle varmits that make my life very hard. I am going to build new pens with rabbit wire for the birds and the bottom first two feet will be old tin to keep the varmits out of the pens. I just cant afford to loose a good breeder over something that I think I have control on.

Hope you have a nice day.

Show us some pictures of true to GOD Heritage Fowl. I dont want to see the other kind. I want to see birds from breeders that you got eggs or chicks from this year.

For you who want Partridge Silver Pencilled Rocks they will be harder than ever to locate. Just no buddy wants to breed them and what is out there so very rare.

So befor you look at these pirty pictures in these catalogs ask yourself is there any alive worth fooling with.
