What are pros and cons about Black Jersey Giants? Mainly when it comes to breeding, meat, and personality of the roosters.

News of the Konza Prairie Rangers coming soon :) The project has been progressing nicely and hatching eggs should be available in the next week or so.

Congratulations on that, but this is the heritage large fowl thread. Please start another thread with your creations, so we can stay on topic here..

Quote: I am happy for your Konza Praierie Rangers. Maybe I can come up with a catchy name for my Red Chickens I got on Fish River. I will call them the Fish River Cherry Egger Reds. How do you like that MATT 1616. Joe Ipswich my partner and I will make a fortune at that.

Now on to the Heritage Large Fowl tread. Large fowl that crows softly. That lets the Reds and Rocks out as they are the loudest. I had a mentor who had to silence down his Rhode Island Reds in Oklahoma City Oklahoma. He went with Dark Cornish. So why dont you get you some Dark Cornish large fowl and they will give you meat meat meat and a soft voice.\

In regards to a dual purpose breed. On the Rhode Island Red Club newsletter that I got as a young boy they had these three words to describe dual purpose. Meat, Eggs, Looks. You can take looks as something very pretty walking on a green lawn such as a male and four nice females in a breeding pen. Or they can be tight feathered looks like someone sprayed a sheen of oil on them for a chicken show. Do you know in 28 years I have only showed in five major chicken shows. Local County fairs dont count except the top twenty chickens in the small show aren't scrubs. Some of these guys are like Walt. The will beat you with a finish on their birds.

Now on the subject of those chickens are show birds they ain't any good for nothing. Ever hear this???

I was seven years old and walking from my house to the bus stop with my mother who was the Production Rhode Island Red queen of Washington State. I was walking along and saw some white wyandotte large fowl snow white as can be and I said to myself those are the best chickens I have ever seen. Look Mama look at those pretty white chickens. She said those chickens are show chickens they aren't any good for nothing but looks. Boy the bummed me out then latter I got to look at them when my dad was at the little convenient store near these chickens and a young guy in genes and a tea shirt came out and told me what they where. He was about five years older than me. Walt may know him he is APA Judge Larry Urban from Rochester Washington.

So you will hear these comments from people and many on this site are died and the wool hatchery barn yard cull lovers. They even NAME their chickens can you believe that.???

I had to get off that thread as these twenty to thirty year old experts where making my blood pressure go up and almost had a STROKE.

I said good buy to that thread. I cant stand that kind of chicken and I hate those swap meets because that's all I see is those kind of chickens.

I want a dual purpose chicken. Eggs, Meat extended KEELS and looks.

That's my two cents for the day.

Got to go out and feed and water Mr. Silkie and talk to my ducks. May even huge one.

I am feeling pretty good I had a good day at work and did kill any old ladies in the process.

You all enjoy the Olympics to night on TV. Should be a good night as last night was first class. bob

Genetics are weird. In five years you could mate a cockerel to a pullet that are distant cousins and have all single combs hatch. If two birds are both carrying the same recessive genes they can show up. Asking questions and trial and error are both wonderful teachers. However, trial and error can be expensive!

and very, very time consuming.

I know Larry, Bob. ...maybe forty years or so and we were on the APA Board together. I have a whole pen of stuff I could hang a name on........but is as already been done and done and done........a little inside tip here about names. If you ever think you want a breed in the APA Standard ........don't name it Showgirl, Sizzle or use three names. Can anyone tell me if there is a Showboy? Sex specific names don't fly.

I get discouraged too Bob. My evaluations at the university always said I was a good communicator, but I must be doing something wrong here. You and I don't know everything about chickens, so how is it that all these other people do? Bob......we should learn this chicken stuff online cuz it seems all these folks have learned much more than you and I combined in just a very short time. Maybe we need to watch some youtube videos or something.

I figure there are plenty of lurkers and that audience can make their decisions based on what we say verses what the experts say. For those that don't know this.....you don't necessarily have to know much about chickens to have "Educator" under your name.

There is one thread here I just can't visit anymore.........every time I do I think my head is going to explode. I'll keep posting as long as I think someone wants to learn. I had a lot of help from people when I started and I will never forget that. I'm learning as fast as I can.

Walt,
I wanted to show you that one dwarf-like Barred Rock. It is mostly feathered out, but still small.

It looks pretty normal. How does it walk? It even looks healthy. It will be interesting to see if it goes all the way into adulthood. I have never had a chicken do this, but I have had ducks do it and they never made it past 9-10 months. They didn't look this healthy though. His head may be the giveaway that he is a cretin.

Walt
