I'll need it. She laid a couple of eggs right after the fair. I wasn't sure IF Jeremy let his boys with this pullet. Being a stringman, their on the orad for weeks at a time. He brought well over a 100 birds to the fair. So, I did try to hatch them three eggs, but she hadn't been riden in a while and they were duds. Now this egg I put in, should be fertile. IF not I may put her in another Buff pen to see IF it is the cockerel who isn't quite got the routine down or not.

Example -
Copper -
Copper plays an important role in a number of enzyme functions in the bird. Copper is closely associated with iron metabolism as it is a part of ceruloplasmin which is an enzyme that plays an important role in the oxidation of ferrous to ferric iron, controlling the movement of iron from the reticuloendothelium to liver and then plasma, affecting red blood cell formation. A copper deficiency can cause microcytic hypochromic anemia. Another important enzyme dependent on copper is lysyl oxidase which is an integral enzyme in elastin and collagen formation in birds. A deficiency of copper can cause bone abnormalities due to abnormal collagen synthesis. Tibial dyschondroplasia is an example of a leg disorder in poultry that can be caused by a copper deficiency. Poor collagen and/or elastin formation can also lead to cardiovascular lesions and aortic ruptures. Copper is also important for feather development as well as feather colour via it’s role in disulfide bond formation. Iron has a very specific function in all animals as a component of the protein heme found in the red blood cell’s protein haemoglobin and in the muscle cell’s protein myoglobin. Iron has a rapid turnover rate in the chicken – 10 X per day, so it must be provided in a highly available form in the bird’s diet on a daily basis. Any internal infection such as coccidiosis can also interfere with iron absorption and availability. Iron deficiency can result in microcytic, hypochromic anemia in poultry.

or

Iron -
Iron is needed for the formation of hemoglobin, which carries oxygen from the lungs to the body cells.

The new SOP will not have a picture of the Barred either. No one has sponsored a pic yet. Use the shape of the white to see where you are with conformation.

They look good to me. I really like the male.

Walt,
Thanks !!
Their both really nice size. I have them next to my Buff Cochin's pen, and I see them two up against the fence and this White cockerel is bigger all the way around. Taller and broader. A friend (Harry) thinks they maybe the same line from a gentlemen in PA that rarely lets anything go. I finally got an egg laid this past week & it went strait to the incubator. Till I start getting more, I am not letting one chick go anywhere from here.

The only other good whites I have seen are Cecil Moore of TX and John Monaco out here in CA. Johns are probably from Cecil.

COLUMBIAN PLYMOUTH ROCKS

I just got off the phone with Mike Wagner from Michigan his wife is at the big chicken show at Lucasville Ohio this weekend. I wish i had sent her my video camera to take pictures of the birds for me. There are two breeds I have the hots for and that the Columbian Plymouth Rock Large Fowl out of Canada and she may be getting two trios of the chicks from the parents that came into Michigan last year. Our 4 dozen egg transfer this spring ended up in a bust some varmints got in and killed all of the remain chicks so that project went down the toilet. If they get the birds today maybe I can help my friend yard full of Rocks get the best Columbian Large Fowl I have seen in years. I have some pictures of what good Columbian Rocks HERITAGE type are suppose to look like. I hope I spelled that word right. The young lady comes from California and her name is Madison Ford. To me here Columbian Rock Bantams have outstanding colored and type. So my goal in the next five years is to get the large fowl Columbian Rocks to look like these. I have two to three gung ho breeders who want to breed them so my job as Club Secretary of the Rock Club is to help these guys and girls get the best stock in the world to begin with and then breed them up to the standard.

I also, have a picture I got on photo bucket of a pair of Light Brahmas. A fellow asked me a while back what was the size difference between a large fowl and a bantam. This is a good illustration of the size which should be about one fifth smaller in a bantam than a large fowl. Look at the color of the light Brahma and see the coloration with the Columbian Plymouth Rock pattern. It is about the same except no feathers on the toes. This is how the Columbian Rock and Wyandotte got its color years ago from the cross on the white rock and the white Wyandotte’s using the light Brahmas. Of course every twenty or thirty years a breeder will get a light Brahma and cross it on a white rock large fowl and start his own strain. That may what happen in Canada as the breeder male or the franchise male in the project looked like a light Brahma when I first saw him. That’s what got me excited when the picture was sent to me by the breeder.

So this is you lesion on Colombian Plymouth Rock Large Fowl for today. Yard Full of Rocks This is your Day you are King for the Day. We salute your favorite breed of chicken. I have had others ask me for pictures of other colors of Plymouth Rocks and when I have time I will send my pictures to photo bucket and post them for you. Also, this will give the beginner a chance to see what these breeds look like if you have never seen them before in the yard. Seeing an artists version in a catalog is misleading that’s the perfect chicken of the breed and seeing the live chickens we have today is realality we are working with. Some breeds we want just aren’t worth a hoot. They are very difficult to breed they where commercial wonders back in the 1950s for meat production and they got into the standard of perfection and feel out of popularity because they would not breed true. There are at least 10 to 20 breeds of chickens today that people would like to breed but there are just not any good birds to start with.

The other breed I am trying to track down is Single Comb Rhode Island Reds and I am what Jackie Gleason use to say it hot pursuit. I found a line of birds that makes me almost have chest pain. I and my partner Anthony are going to try to get some this spring and breed them up to this climate here in the south.

Well got to go outside and do everything over again. Water, feed and look at how they are growing. Then off to work to take care of people with Alzheimer's disease. Bob

Walt,
I am suppose to get a White cockerel from my Black Orp breeder who has both Black and Whites from Cecil's. Cecil no longer deals with the public, he is nearing 90. Any Whites from him will come via thru her. And she is excited I have these two Whites. Another good Orpington friend also has, what he says, are similar lines, and maybe from an Old School breeder in PA. He says my cockerel looks very close to what he has and seen from that fellow.
I would love to see what John Monaco has. Maybe IF you run into him at a show you can passs the word that I am interested.

thanks
Bill

I have seen Madison Ford's Columbian bantams and they are knock outs! For some reason I have in the back of my head that she was selling that flock, but it might be another young person with great Columbians out here. They are striking birds when right.
