I don't often make comments but lurk a lot. The decision to come back to topic is appreciated.

I have Columbian Wyandottes and Cochins from known breeders and while I don't show...yet.. I am interested in *keeping* my breeds to the standard. I just got my SOP 2010 and am reading and learning. In addition to maintaining the integrity of these breeds, I am working on a Birchen Wyandotte.

I appreciate the knowledge and your willingness to share it with those of us just starting out.

Not knowing the Marans breed very well, weren't they one of the breeds that were originally used to begin the Marans?

I believe they may have been, yes.

Ok, now that I know you discussed my husband's brain and his painting of Elvis and Brownie on here, I'll have to back up and read this whole thread!

Here is a younger heritage breed, a Lamona, these were recreated by Steve Gerdes who just recently passed away. I believe they are going into some very capable hands.

Now there's a breed if you want eggs, eggs, eggs!
Oh I wish I had room for them too!

Going wayyyyyy back. There was talking of using Broilers for meat.

Heres a question for you. Has any one ever used one of the true breeding broiler and bred to there white bird to improve growth weight and size?

And before every one throws stones at me and tells me "Son there is no such thing as true breeding broiler". There is a true breeding broiler bred by Don Shaver (ohh the poultry industry owes so much to that man and fellow canuck). It's a very old line and is hard to find. How ever i have heard there are rumors that the line is still in PA. I am guessing with some of the Amish?

These crosses are not bad. You can improve growth rate and meat production with out out crossing. BUT by crossing to a almost extint line of true breeding cornish cross you will be picking up the traits that make them good growers. Than you can slowy integrate those 'improved' growers back into your flock.

Two new standard bred birds (in quarantine) He's a bit washed out because of the flash. This year's birds.
Help finding the sop thread for these would be appreciated

I read over to the Showbird site that there are some who have crossed in Cobb-Vantress stuff into their Rocks don't know all the details but they must be trying to get them BIGGER still yet, the kicker here is, some of these guys ARE some of our distinguished judges and masters at breeding also.

I venture to say it surely doesn't help with the not so spiffy laying of these birds too. In my experiences in the past, these broiler crosses probly have a feed/egg lay rate conversion of 5-10 % on a good day (young, springtime conditions) the bigger the bird the less they lay, its a natural given as the more mass a metabolic system has to support the less efficient it is at producing (extras) I don't get some of the ideas folks come up with sometimes but I don't get a lot of regular stuff either, LOL In other words its all for show. I think it was Walt who said this type issue will naturally weed itself out, but too that doesn't keep man from just keeping on crossing and crossing (showing hybrids?) to have this type results too, IMO

Ok I'll quit and sure I'm going to get lambasted but he he Oh well
