With almost 20 chickens in possession and having raised them since March of this year in my back yard, I believe I have reached "expert" status on BYC, Robert, so I would be happy to provide you any sort of advice you need.

I believe if you took the progeny from Mr. Silkie and your Red banties and cross them in with some of Lacy Blue's Andalusians, you have the makings of a patriotic colored Red, White, and Blue hen. If you start now and work fast, you just might have chicks in time for the Fourth of July.

If you like, I can draw you out a genetic chart with Punnett squares and everything so you can even back it up with science!

All the best.

You know, I read this post shortly after you posted it and I'm still in shock! Please tell me you are joking around!

Thanks for the information. I have decided after I blew all the saw dust out of my nose I am not going to cross Mr. Silikie. Think I will take him to a Taxidermist and have him stuffed and put him on a table in my shop as he is like a pet. Maybe I could get a Seroma cage and put him in the cage like they do in Malaysia with the seromas.

Interesting when people post their feed store chickens on this tread asking if they are Heritage or not. Some try to stretch it to say they kind of look like the ones in 1895 when they started.

All I can say if you want to breed these washed out birds go for it. There is nothing saying you have to breed them to the standard of perfection and you will enjoy them any way.

Some end up at a big chicken show like the Ohio National and then see the top lines in the USA and say to them selves these are so much pretty er than my old chickens from the feed store.

Heck I get emails asking if they could cross a fancy Heritage type bird like a barred rock onto their feed store birds then they would be Heritage Right?

Was talking on the phone today with a Friend about the issue of Hogs being in short demand as pure breeds. Sheep goats, are getting thin as well. I think the American Rabbit Breeders are in pretty good shape. Heck they got thousands of breeders and members. One reason they dont have problems like we do is you cant buy rabbits from feed stores or hatchery's. Most of the ones people get can be registered.

There are many breeds of live stock that are getting thin but if more people move to the country and get a few acres more will want nicer livestock.

Nice New Hampshire Red you have pictured there I bet they lay very well. These where the kind that people where buying by the thousands in the 1960 my neighbor got 50 day old chicks one time from Sears or Montgomery Wards as they use to sell them in the Farm Catalogs.

That could be how they got their name New Hampshire Reds. I still never heard how that came about.

Ok newbie stupid question. The barring on the barred rocks are fantastic and I can see how that is desirable. But the necks seem to come out of the body at absolute right angles, almost seeming to go the reverse way I think it should. Is that correct for a Barred Rock or should it be a more smooth line? Or do I just need to look at other breeds and quit wondering about one I dont' plan to have? LOL.

Someone posted a while back and I have lost the link.
Where can I get a current copy of the SOP?

I have the standard for the breeds I have, but want to learn more form the instructional section of the book....

HERE!

Thank you Kathy. On Amazon.com the book was $250 plus shipping.
Amazon does have a 1906 version in paperback for $23.95 plus shipping if anyone is interested.

I don't care who you are, that's funny.

You need to get rid of the winner sign under your name and get one that says "Educator" and then you can really argue with all the other experts here. Your quals are much better than some of the experts here. 10 months puts you in that area of expertise and you have a lot more chickens than most........go for it!

Walt

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Walt.

I think I got the "winner" status for an article I wrote a month or two after joining BYC. So, I guess that means I've been an "expert" for a while now. Come to think of it, I think I wrote the article before I even owned any chickens....

So how do you get an "Educator" sign? I don't have to know anything, do I?

As a response to one of Bob's posts, can there be any doubt?

I think it was Bob who suggested that we just all sit back and let the suburbanites with three hens in a backyard coop tell us all how it's really done. I don't have quite that much inexperience, but I'm pretty close, so I thought he'd appreciate my "expertise."

But wouldn't a red, white & blue chicken be pretty cool?

Quote: I am working on a red white and blue floating fishing lure. So far they like the white body and red head look.

I am going to make a pen the first of the year which will be red white and blue. Its like the ameican flag. A chicken this color I dont know if I have seen one.

Love all you experts out there. If you are over one year and still doing this stuff you are all right. Five years Wow. Then the Ten year people thats a mile stone. The people over 20 years we are sick.

Got to love it howver, now I am going to blow my noise one more time and get the fine saw dust out and read my poutlry press.

You all have a great night.

Edit: I just got a personel message. Where can we get Silver Spangled Hamburds Heritage Quality. Any tips?
