Any one have a toe punch chart for the Lurkers?

Show people I have a question, if I raise a slow maturing breed, the chicks are hatched in Jan. & Feb. would they be mature enough to show the following Jan. in an APA show?

We always try to hatch our Orpingtons from November to February. Most Orpington breeders also hatch their large fowl this way.

I use wingbands. I don't mind putting a band on a chick. I just can not imagene punching a whole in the webbing though. Odd. What sorts of methods do you guys use?

I like wingbands because i can change the colour up every year and i can if i wanted to get my name stamped into them. That way if i ever thought about buying new stock i could check to see if they were ones raised directley or not.

Although if wing bands are put on wrong they can fall off. How ever that seems to be with the jeffey type not the sip type.

I guess it comes down to personal opeion and your climate location?

Having used several methods,Wing band, toe punch and leg banding.
Toe punching is my preferred method and what I currently use. It is easier and appears to no more painful than wing banding. I toe punch with a toe punch tool as I remove them from the hatcher. It is permanent and easy to see without handling the bird.
Wing bands cannot be seen without handling the bird.

Another thing chicks always seem to peck at the wing bands. They pay no attention to toe punches.

You just assign a pattern from the chart to particular matings.

I also leg band all my birds for individual ID.

I know a breeder on the west coast of some really nice black australorps. I can find his info if you'd like.
Thanks so much for the info. Mr Sherman doesn't breed enough each year to sell chicks or eggs, but I appreciate the effort on your part!
Guess I will still plan to obtain some of the Urch line.
Do any of the heritage breeders here have any opinions on his BAs?

Quote: yes Ron i have notcied that to. After i put them on the tend to stick there beak around it. Although they get used to after a day or so.

i was wondering because i see a lot of people using toe punches. But if you have a lot of hatches/year would you not run out of space?

You have 15 different combinations. That a lot of breeding pens even if you do single matings.
