Nothing like hearing the sound of an Ole Big Block Mopar Wedge 413 with the heads shaved down .040's with 361 crank and connecting rods bored all the way out. You can do the same with the older Hemi 392's and their sister engine 331's. My Powergiant 354 can be bored out .120 over. Since it only has about 30,000 on it, I am not ready to convert it into a full drag engine, when I am I am getting a Patterson driveshaft (UNBLOWABLE)! Then I just need to weld the frame and off to IRP.

Personally, I would go ahead and do a lower wattage bulb for each pen. It doesn't take anymore effort. That is just the way I am. You have nice pens. That would "finish" them.

FOr what it's worth, I have one bulb in a 8x6 ccop and the girls can hide from the light by sleeping away from the bulb. I'm still experimenting to see if changing the location and the number of bulbs ( relative to the perches) will increase the laying rate. I"m using a 60 watt bulb but only getting about 12 eggs a day from 30 hens . . . . this isn't conclusive but I"m thinking location, location, location.

I think one 20 watt bulb in each pen would more than do it. Just do not use the rugged outdoor lights by GE. They have a coating which emits a dangerous gas and has killed poultry when used in indoor coops.
Karen Oh , and 75 watt incandescent bulb have been outlawed as of 1/1/13. In 2014, the 40 and 60 watt incandescent bulbs will also be outlawed. get um while you can. No incandescent light bulbs are manufactured in the US anymore.

Big Blocks have a sound all there own, then if you put in a Radical cam and start throwing in all the bells a whistles they just sound even better.

Back in the olden days, the cam of choice was the Iskandarian 505 Magnum Roller Cam. But I have been out of motors too long to know what these young gear heads like.
I still have my four 413's and two 383 Golden Lions, plus my fav engine is my Powergiant 354. That I got out of a Navy10 ton old Dodge 700. This truck could rip the tires for 10 feet with that engine. And this was a 10 ton truck too runnin dual ten hundred by 22's. Lots of beef to move up and down the road. Another neat bolt on fun part for these old hemi was the 8 single barrel intakes that I found someone selling for a $100 each. This was before the fuel injecter days. You can run eight 150 CFM carbs with that. That would also make you have to buy one heck of a large electronic fuel pump too. that can get you down to 8 gallons per mile real fast. Right now that engine is severly nuetered with a 400 CFM Ball & Ball 2 barrel carb. And is still able to rip those big semi truck tires.

I think what he said was sometimes, when it's alone in the garage, it likes to feel pretty.

I'm leaning in this direction only because I was thinking about the shadows and was not sure if that would cause problems or not. I have no problem installing or doing the wiring....that's no big deal to me. My only concern is that I will have 9 lights running maybe more if I light up my other 4 pens. Just don't want to be throwing good money out the window for no reason. lol! I'm saying that after I spent all this money on building these pens.... lol!! My wife is going to kill me if I keep it up.

We use the the new energy saver bulbs, those that are 15 but look 40--we can obviously see that my partner is the son of the electrician here and not I. It will keep the cost down.

If your main concern is how much light do you need to simulate longer day lengths and encourage winter time production then one light in the center pen is plenty. The down fall to this, if this is a down fall, is that the possible dark spots or shadows in the outer pens will give the birds places to nest outside the nest boxes and may trigger increased broodiness..

One bulb in the center will do the trick if this is about laying. Be sure to start a schedule for adjusting your timer so that you maintain proper day length and don't induce molt.

Hi Chris,
I wanted to run addtional lighting to my 2 coops(large one is 4x6ft.) , but I wanted enough light into the coops so if there was a scary sound outside at night, the birds could see each other and might not get as scared. So I went to Lowes and bought a couple of their $16.98 solar, wall-mounted LED lights. They put out about 20 watts at night. I just screwed them onto the outside wall with the light shining thru the window. They last 2 years here in western PA. Check the package to make sure there is a bracket to screw it to a wall or post. Portfolio makes several designs at different price points.
