I'm leaning in this direction only because I was thinking about the shadows and was not sure if that would cause problems or not. I have no problem installing or doing the wiring....that's no big deal to me. My only concern is that I will have 9 lights running maybe more if I light up my other 4 pens. Just don't want to be throwing good money out the window for no reason. lol! I'm saying that after I spent all this money on building these pens.... lol!! My wife is going to kill me if I keep it up.

Chris

Go ahead and put a light in each pen. If you don't need them you don't have to use them, but the extra wire and outlets don't cost much and are easy to install now, but will be aggravating to add in later. I know my DH hollered like crazy about me putting so many outlets in our basement and the cabin when we were doing/re-doing the wiring ("who in the world needs an electrical outlet every six feet????"). Those outlets cost only about $1 each to install at the time, but would have been a bear to add later... and yes having an outlet every six feet is WONDERFUL! Just install a switch on each light so you can turn on/off as needed, or better yet istall an outlet that you can plug the light into, that way you can use a cheapy plug-in timer if you want, or even use a string of LED Christmas lights as your light source.

we can run some low voltage lights with a timer....shouldn't be a problem. will come help you knock it out when your ready

It is a 2003 350Z with Vortec a supercharger, Nismo suspension and a whole bunch of other things. It is a 12 second car and can hang with most on a road course. I drive it on the street...I do this for instant gratification as it takes almost a year to win anything with a chicken and the winner is decided by GPS and timing lights....no judges!. I have had this car for 10 years. The kids can't believe I drive a beast like this.....thats kind of entertaining too. I have raced cars since I was 16.

That is a very nice car you have there. I bet that car will just push you in the seat.

I have a question about putting lights in each of my breeding pens. My pens are 6' x 12' over all and divided up into 3 separate pens. They are open air type pens. I'm wondering if one light in the center pen would provide enough lighting for all three or if I should put a light in each individual pen. Also what kind of wattage should I be using for each light?

I've posted these pics before but just to be clear on what I have. I want to install the proper lighting in each of my pens and have them go on with a timer. Over all I have 9 individual breeding pens like.....

Thanks in advance,
Chris
Chris,
If was me I would run a light in each pen with either a 13 watt CFL (equal to at 60 watt incandescent) or a 8 watt LED (equal to a 60 watt incandescent), I would also have them on a good timer.

The old guys have to have fun to.
Hey Walt is that a Nissan 305z your running?

Nothing like hearing the sound of an Ole Big Block Mopar Wedge 413 with the heads shaved down .040's with 361 crank and connecting rods bored all the way out. You can do the same with the older Hemi 392's and their sister engine 331's. My Powergiant 354 can be bored out .120 over. Since it only has about 30,000 on it, I am not ready to convert it into a full drag engine, when I am I am getting a Patterson driveshaft (UNBLOWABLE)! Then I just need to weld the frame and off to IRP.

Chris Herzog, Great pens. And I would do more wiring than you think you need right now. Having outlets and switches will be helpful and provide flexibility in the future...like using a pen as a grow out pen or brooder and the need for an ultraviolet light suspended over the chicks....

Also Herzog and Chris09, The old truck in the picture I posted earlier is a 1975 Ford Ranger that belonged to husband's father. it still runs good and was his dad's farm truck so it is low mileage. Roger wants to fix it up...basically just needs a new paint job because the original interior is in great shape.

Could someone with an APA directory tell me if anyone is breeding/showing Belgian Malines? Getting eggs from Flanders is going to run a minimum of $800.

Thanks on the pens and some good ideas.

I'll buy the 800.00 eggs and trade you for the truck!!! Just kidding, I would like to get an old truck like that one day to use just as that one was used for...An old farm truck.

I ran 3 LED 12volt floodlamps down one side of the barn for the bird pens... seem to be working great.. Have a solar panel charging the battery and all on a timer.. I agree with everyone on doing the extra now even if you don't use it..easier than adding later!! I have mine come on early in the morning and then let the natural dusk occur... That is how I always did my parrots and it seemed to work the best.

Big Blocks have a sound all there own, then if you put in a Radical cam and start throwing in all the bells a whistles they just sound even better.

If your main concern is how much light do you need to simulate longer day lengths and encourage winter time production then one light in the center pen is plenty. The down fall to this, if this is a down fall, is that the possible dark spots or shadows in the outer pens will give the birds places to nest outside the nest boxes and may trigger increased broodiness..
