FOr what it's worth, I have one bulb in a 8x6 ccop and the girls can hide from the light by sleeping away from the bulb. I'm still experimenting to see if changing the location and the number of bulbs ( relative to the perches) will increase the laying rate. I"m using a 60 watt bulb but only getting about 12 eggs a day from 30 hens . . . . this isn't conclusive but I"m thinking location, location, location.

Hi Arielle! One bulb is more than enough for that much space. Depending on when you turned the bulb ob, it can take a solid month before the increase occurs because the light triggers hormones to which the body need respond before the lay begins. Also, it's a specific amount of light, a lot of folks just turn on a light execting results, but there's a method to it.

Chris Herzog, Great pens. And I would do more wiring than you think you need right now. Having outlets and switches will be helpful and provide flexibility in the future...like using a pen as a grow out pen or brooder and the need for an ultraviolet light suspended over the chicks....
Also Herzog and Chris09, The old truck in the picture I posted earlier is a 1975 Ford Ranger that belonged to husband's father. it still runs good and was his dad's farm truck so it is low mileage. Roger wants to fix it up...basically just needs a new paint job because the original interior is in great shape.
Could someone with an APA directory tell me if anyone is breeding/showing Belgian Malines? Getting eggs from Flanders is going to run a minimum of $800.

I don't see any Belgian Malines listed. You may fave some problems finding these.

I am going to order me one. Only $2,500. Found a site about them. I thought it was a new breed of H chickens I did not know about. I only see RED so there are not many chickens other than that color.

Light bulbs I got a barn full. Does it stimulate the Pituitary Gland or is that a old wife's tail. I often wonder if the new bulbs will do the job or it does not make any difference if its old bulbs, new bulbs or Shop Light Fluorescent Bulbs.

Looks like the Psychical Cliff bill has passed the world wont come to a end till next year.

Domestic dog is the greatest predator, for sheep too. At my house my dogs have killed more chickens than the coyote. My fencing is designed to keep people and chickens out of their zone. In their zone, they are on duty. In the house they just sniff a chick and walk on by. My cats too, in side the house is neutral territory!! Mice are safe too. LOL

Do you use sprouted oats during your laying season? A good source of green feed is Plotspike Forage Oats ( 19.99 for 40. lb. bag at Tractor Supply), sprouted to at least 4 days and no older than 7 days old .
Feed 1 cubic inch per bird per day. If you pass bowel tolerance, reduce amount until they firm up again. Helps create more robust sperm in the rooster and helps bring hens into lay. For full explanation and How-To, see BYC thread

Happy New Year,

They kind of look like a cuckoo Marans.

Walt

OMG Thank You! I will check these out and let you know what I find.
I sent an email to the Circle S. Ranch and Poultry

Yes they do look like a Cuckoo Marans.
This breed was developed in Belgium from the Brahama, Cochin and local breeds. The dual purpose breed lays a light tan egg and are gourmet meat birds. They have a thick down that causes the fat to be deposited throughout the meat instead of the pockets under the skin as with most breeds. They are a very large bird.
