And really how many of these "new" varieties are just poor examples of some other variety.
If it wasn't so sad, it would be

, sigh. I think of the Light/Coronation splits being sold as pure one or the other Sussex.
Of the Wheaten/Golden Salmon Marans splits being sold as pure one or the other, Then there are the Silver/Light Sussex splits being sold as pure one or the other.
Gag me with a spoon.

Before the Marans were an APA SOP breed, people bred them with all kinds of things to change or improve the egg color. Not a problem, people can do whatever they like with their chickens, but now they have a mess on their hands. They plan on qualifying the cuckoo and I think white at Shawnee next season. I don't know about the whites, but the cuckoo's have more than a year to go in my opinion. If people would disclose what they have done before selling these things, there wouldn't be such a problem.

There are old pure lines of Cuckoo out there, held by individuals. Pure Ripley, , Fitch, Cratty and a couple of others. If cuckoo Marans people would stop crossing the lines and breed the true lines, they wouldn't have so far to go. When I got my original Kelly Cratty cuckoos back in 2004, he was in the 8th year of a 10 year formal breeding plan. (don'thave them anymore) Real nice birds! So the person who has them now and keeping them pure has gone much further.

I am on my 4th generation of my fugate cuckoo maran program . I am getting a lot of golden cuckoos. The trait seems to have began as one golden feather on the hackle of the rooster we chose to breed with 4 years ago.Is this a negitive sign of in- breeding or is this sport (golden) just a happy accident.Aprox 40% of the hatch is golden. Thank you for any input

CUCKOO MARANS: These rare birds are very pretty dark brown egg layers, my stock comes from really nice imported lines including: Staffordshire, Fitch Ripley, and Fugate, (Karen: does she have separate strains or Shilala cuckoos?, something to ask)all the birds are feathered legged. Chicks are $3.00 each
All my chickens and guineas are pure-bred, each variety is housed separately

This closeout sale was 6 years ago. Maybe Vicki has records who she sold the Cratty and Fugate too:

Of everything I have see, I like the Shine On Farms eggs the best. Didn't spend a lot of looking at the birds, tho.
always ask for egg shell samples when considering Marans.

If you approach this person be able to discuss the US Marans history and the role Ripley and his birds played in it. Have a writtem 5 generatpn breeding plan and be able to articulate why and what you are going to do. That you plan to never cross these bids with any other strain/line/breed...and mean it. You will probably only get one chance at them. BTW, I am a huge fan of Kermit's knowledge. So much of it is written down on the defunct namb list at yahoo. How I wish it could be brought over here.

Karen, who has these cuckoo? I bought project eggs last year and I really like the birds. Quiet, calm, active . . . .waiting for the pullet to lay. 1 pullet, and 3 cckl-- culled the other cckls. So I need a clever breeding method.

Quote: I believe in transparency. If I were working on a new color, I would only sell my birds as "project" birds until they bred true, and were correct type.

Most of us working with Marans are well aware that they are still very much a work in progress. It's great to have them officially recognized because it does get people out and looking at them more seriously, and, hopefully, gives us a more consistent goal to shoot for. I'm curious to see the Cuckoos at Newnan this year ....

What I saw when some breeders were working on Lavender Orpingtons was that they'd sell project birds and the people that bought them would then sell their progeny as "(Breeders name)" PURE Lavenders. After seeing this happen often enough, I don't think I'd want to even sell a project bird. Later, at least one of the breeders, the Hinkles, had managed to come up with a really nice, typey lavender but all these others were running around with their tag on them, not of proper type. Because they were project birds. Not the finished product.

Cuckoo was the only color of Marans I had seen until about 10 years ago. They were decent birds, but they were all clean legged as the British birds are. So far...I have not seen a good cuckoo posted online or in person. That does not mean there are not good ones, but it is an indication that more than likely there are not a lot of good ones. They will need at least 50 good ones to get them in the SOP.

Walt, Bob or any other long time breeders and judges, Do you recall the name of a long time breeder in Oklahoma who has since died that raised and showed Wyandottes...particularly Columbian? We have been having a conversation here and none of us can remember the gentleman's name.

The only long time breeder of wyandotte in that area is Herbet Holtz and I believe he was from Iowa.
