Thanks, that's what I was trying to figure out - if I could use a male with a back issue and still get some birds without the back problem out of him.

One of the best looking cockerels, with a beautiful broad back and tail, is dumber than a box of rocks. He tries to hump my boot every time I walk into the coop. He gets a little unexpected flight every time he tries it, but he always tries it. Makes me think a slightly round-shouldered, narrower-tailed bird that knows the difference between a pullet and a boot might be a better choice in the long run.

On the positive side, if he did decide to jump a chicken over a boot, you wouldn't have to worry about fertility.

Scott - give her the 1/2 cooked eggs. Chickens can't tell time, so it will make no difference to her.

Walt got 12 silkies coming to the post office this am. A trade for ten red bantam chicks. Mr. Silkie is doing back flips on this deal. Why not people will pay me $50 for a silkie at a show and $10 for a Red or White Leghorn Bantam. One way to get my return on my horse trade. Plus Silkies are quite. I got to buy me a baby name book so I can name them.

Boy there has been a run this year for White Rock Chicks. I don't have enough hens to supply the demand. So you out there that have good ones be ready next year.

Still big demand for Rhode Island Red chicks.

Hatches a total of 12 Mottle Javas so far so the strain is still alive.

Yup.......Silkies are big money makers. Maybe I'll have to hatch some eggs from my blacks. My cash cow are these Ko Shamo bantams that aren't even recognized by the APA/ABA yet (they will be in a year or so). People line up and throw money at me to get these. I can't sell a white Leghorn bantam to save my life.....lol

Yup. A high of 79 F yesterday afternoon here south of Colorado Springs. It was 41 F this morning in the coop, which was projected to be the high of the day. Currently light drizzle with light snow predicted by noon.

Probably because they look like little Velociraptors, VBG. Everyone wants a Velociraptor in their backyard, right?

As my wife and I keep leaning toward raising non-hatchery standard chickens, we come up with more questions. I've asked a few questions previously with great answers on this thread so I'd like to ask a few more.

In our current flock of 35, there is 1 cock. With the eggs that we eat, we're seeing a 90-95% fertility rate, and he has 3 of the hens backs completely worn out. Is that normal?

When we started our flock, we had 2 cockerels, but they fought to the point that one of them constantly had blood spattered on him. We have since eaten the aggressor since he was also getting after our daughters. I have heard from some in-laws that used to raise chickens, that if you have more than one cock, no matter the number of hens, at least one will become aggressive(no matter the initial disposition) toward the others. Is this true? What's the best way to mitigate this problem when all of the chickens are free range? They free range 15 acres except when we have to irrigate and harvest. Then they're locked in their 32'x13' tractor. We do not want to keep 3 or 4 year round stationary pens just for the breeding stock.

What we do have is the space and equipment to set up 7 pens for breeding/brooding. Once the breeding and brooding are done, we want to integrate everything into one or two tractors for the majority of the year.

I have more questions, but I’ll stick to flock cohesiveness and setup for now.

Thanks,
Colburg

I free range the hens, when they are not in breeding pens, and rotate the cock birds out one at a time. We built a row of rooster pens to house extra males. They take turns being out with the hens when not being used for breeding.

The males that are raised together usually get along. Others don't.

I have to share my joy! I received some Delaware chicks from kathyinmo this morning! I'm finally going to have some big chickens! I hope that I can breed them properly with what I have been learning.

I too must share my joy from Kathy! Excellent stock from an generous and lovely heart, right to my doorstep! And she threw in some excellent little WRs x 2!!!

All are wild and woolly and growing like weeds at a wk old. now...this the day they arrived. If you see wet spots on their fur, it's due to the tears of joy.....
