Taking 3riverschick suggestion and posting on here our needs for chickens and what our area and home offers them. We live in the Northeast, cold, snowy winters, summers are hot, humid, and like lately, can rain often! We cannot free range in our town. We have children, one who loves to pretend she is a farmer and hang out in the pen with them. We have one coop now and another under construction. A bigger one. The one we have now can house 6-8 but we have 5 in there right now. The bigger one is sized to hold 10-12. There is an outdoor pen connected to the coops! We also have two ducks, with their own house! Right now we are keeping chickens for eggs and as entertaining pets that we love. Not in it for the meat with these layers! Maybe some day down the road we will get meat birds, but not ready for that mentally. Someone mentioned having our girls join 4-H. Haven't fully looked into what that entails. Maybe next year. Right now we are just enjoying their antics and love observing them! We are still learning. I think I covered it all. We really can't breed as we don't have the big space and coop to keep adding and adding. Ok, so with all that being said, which Heritage Breeds would be best for my family?? Thank you all for your support and kindness! This is a great learning experience!

Dominique is another one I do like!

BLT79, google the "Boston Poultry Expo" and the "North Eastern Poultry Congress". The former takes place just south of Worcester, the latter in Springfield. The latter is hosting the 2013 APA National and will be very big this year. This is a great way to fan the flames.

I know a lot of people like old books on this thread. Did anyone notice that someone is selling an entire library of poultry books ( the entire collection as one money) in this month's issue of poultry press? I don't have all of the information for contact numbers because I cut and used the coupon from the other side of the page :) The person is wanting to start bids at $20,000

Yes, I did notice, and then I started thinking that either there are folks out there with a lot more money than us, or there are folks that think there are folks with a lot more money than us.

The Book Sale is more likely aimed at Rare Book Collectors. There is a lot of money in stuff like that.

Quote: You got that right. before the book search databases all combined and the mega search engines for books were created. I did well searching for unappreciated rare books, buying and reselling them. Now a days, it is easier for the booksellers to cross-ref their prices with other sellers to see if they have it priced right. Back then it was different. I once spent about 90. for a three volume set of obscure dog books and resold them for 350.
Best,
Karen
