Taking 3riverschick suggestion and posting on here our needs for chickens and what our area and home offers them. We live in the Northeast, cold, snowy winters, summers are hot, humid, and like lately, can rain often! We cannot free range in our town. We have children, one who loves to pretend she is a farmer and hang out in the pen with them. We have one coop now and another under construction. A bigger one. The one we have now can house 6-8 but we have 5 in there right now. The bigger one is sized to hold 10-12. There is an outdoor pen connected to the coops! We also have two ducks, with their own house! Right now we are keeping chickens for eggs and as entertaining pets that we love. Not in it for the meat with these layers! Maybe some day down the road we will get meat birds, but not ready for that mentally. Someone mentioned having our girls join 4-H. Haven't fully looked into what that entails. Maybe next year. Right now we are just enjoying their antics and love observing them! We are still learning. I think I covered it all. We really can't breed as we don't have the big space and coop to keep adding and adding. Ok, so with all that being said, which Heritage Breeds would be best for my family?? Thank you all for your support and kindness! This is a great learning experience!
