I wouldn't put any bird into a wire cage/carrier that I planned on showing. Most folks use carrying boxes with smooth sides and dowels in the air opening. The birds sit while they are in these so keep that in mind for your requirements.

You can train the birds in the same kind of wire cages used in shows. They have round wire and good spacing on the sides. Hardware cloth/poultry netting sides is just asking to have the feathers knicked. Any place you can see on a carrier where feathers will poke through should be a dowel or heavy gauge round wire. If unsure take a hand full of tail/wing feathers and run it around the inside of the enclosure. If it catches on anything .....well that is the end of the show. Chickens will saw right through a feather if there is a rough edge.

Karen the large fowl coops at shows have wooden floors and then shavings on them. You can get a single coop for a male entry fo r day $3.50 per single coop. If your male is to large or long for the coop you ask the show secretary for a double coop and check off that box and pay double. When you get to the show. Your entry will be double cooped and he will have water and feed in his coop waiting for him. You put him in and move on to the next bird you entered. Most females are cooped in single coops but some like to have a double coop so the bird has room to show off to the judge. If the bird is so tall say 30 inches or more and his comb sticks out of the top of the normal large fowl coop a good judge may write LARGE on your coop tag and not place your male very high or give him first place but that's as far as he is going to go.

At home I have coops about the size of a goose coop and the males have plenty of room to move round in and for my bantams I have two by two foot cages to train them then I put hem in a regular bantam coop so they can get use to the small size before the show.


Hope this helps. My old large fowl conditioning pens which I have 12 are 4x4 feet and worked great to condition a young male two months before the show. I am building chicken tractors that are three by three by six feet to put them on grass during the days and rotate the males to them and then at night return them to their conditioning pens then the next day I put some other male in there. Kind of a poor mans free range method but it protects them from the hawks during they day when I am not home. Hope this helps.

I will also work on some size boxes for large fowl that you could make for your birds to transport your birds to a show. I use to make them on the west coast out of old fruit boxes that fruit was sent to us from Calif. Worked great. You only need thin wood and make it strong with some of my magic glue I sniff. bob

I got the male for you that will shave light years off your program. He has the station, tail...the whole works. Someone "gifted" this specimen to me by throwing it over my 6ft fence....I know it didn't fly in. It looks like it has everything you need Bob. As soon as it cools down I will ship it off to you. With some breeding suggestions. Throw one of your RIR bantams with him and you will get the single comb and away you go..........how lucky you are that I just have him running around.

Hey, I think Yeti's have black skin too....the one in Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer did. Yeti is a perfect name for that Sarcoma, Walt.
