I will hopefully get one of Tims Reds before snow fly's here. I would like to get is and the Dennis Myers hens in the breeding pen before winter shows it ugly head here.
I do not know of anyone who has Delawares nor have I seen any in my day. We will have to beat the bushes and look for them and may see them at the Ohio National or at the APA National in Shawnee. They are super rare and not many breeders have them. I did find this on the breed below.
Delawares, originally called "Indian Rivers," were developed by George Ellis of Delaware in 1940 and were used for the production of broilers. The breed originated from crosses of Barred Plymouth Rock roosters and New Hampshire hens.
The Delaware makes an excellent dual-purpose bird. It has well-developed egg and meat qualities, and a calm and friendly disposition. The breed is noted for rapid growth and fast feathering of the chicks. Cocks grow to 8 pounds and hens to 6 pounds. ALBC
Here are some good web sites on Heritage breeds or type heritage breeds into your Google search engine. You can learn a lot in just a few minutes by using this service. http://albc-usa.org/cpl/wtchlist.html
My idea of a Heart age Chicken is a breed of Poultry that was once introduced into the American Poultry Association Standard of Perfection since the 1850s. These breeds were dual purpose breeds for example the layed a good number of eggs per year, had good flesh for eating and they had beauty to the eye. These chickens if breed correctly can live good long lives if a farmer or breeder wishes to keep them that long 3 to 6 six years. These chickens have a slow to medium rate of growth before the mature
to laying and breeding age. They are not chickens with names of old time chickens that start laying in four or five months which have leghorn blood mixed in them to produce this early rate of laying.
These old breeds are able to mate on their own and reproduce their offspring like themselves and their parents before them. The term like produces like is a term used by old time breeders for these old style breeds that fall into the Heartage breed list.
Examples of Heart age breeds is Barred Plymouth Rocks, Silver Penciled Plymouth Rocks, Columbian Wyandottes, Rose Comb and Single Comb Rhode Island Reds, White Faced Black Spanish, Black Minorcas, Dark Brown Leghorns, Light Brahmas, Buff Orpingtons , Dorkings, Buckeyes, Red Caps, Malays, White Cornish, Delawares just to name a few.
My first breeds where Barred Plymouth Rocks and Light Brahmas Production birds, then Single Comb Rhode Island Reds the real kind dark mahogany colored ones.
Hope this helps you understand the term Heart age Breeds from my view point. There are a few Hatcheries that I have checked into that have tried to have stock that is close to true breeds. Mr. Fox at Ideal Hatchery in Texas tries when he can and a hatchery in the mid west Cackle Hatchery has had some pretty good birds. If you know a hatchery that has surprised you with pretty good birds let us know. I have nothing against hatcheries as they produce thousands of chickens to people all over the country. Its the person who owns the birds that needs to decide if they want to move up a notch and change over to a true to breed chicken if the breed they have does not meet the true to breed profivle.
Many times when they show their birds at fairs the judges will help them on what they have and pull out a picture of the correct colored bird in the standard of perfection to show them the differece. We as breeders will help these beginners and if they are interested will help them locate the real good strains and help them get started with the breed of choice. Also, go to Jackys web site http://dianejacky.com/ and she has great pictures of chickens for you to look at. Many people get into raising and breeding Hearate chickens, become members of these breed clubs and future officers and directors becaue they saw a ad in a back of a magazine received a pretty catalog with pretty pictures on it of chickens. We have to get started some how and hopefully we can enjoy our chickens to what level you choose. Hope you have a great day bob. http://dianejacky.com/

I'll be there Kathy....you can give me a hard time in person.
That will make the trip worth it! Could you wear a pink shirt, so I can find you?
I kinda look like your hubby, but without the beard. Same kind of eyes. No pink shirt, but I shouldn't be hard to find. I'll meet you over by the chickens.
