The Cubalaya is a heritage breed as long as they don't mature any sooner than than 16 weeks (4 months).
They were admitted into the Standard in1939 and the "cut off" would be 1950/51.

I love this thread...so much wonderful information and such extraordinary birds!

I have rosecomb RIR, Barred Holland, Russian Orloff, and Chantecler. I also have worked extensively on Delawares, but have decided to sell my entire flock so as to concentrate more on my other breeds. I quickly snapped this pic of one of my RIR hens this morning...before the rain set in. Any opinions and critiques are appreciated.

I have a real quick question.
Is the Orloff in the Standard? I looked in my 2001 Standard and didn't see them.
The reason I ask is if they are not in the Standard then they wouldn't be considered a Heritage Breed. (In the U.S.)

No, Orloffs are no longer in the standard. I breed according to the WAY OLD standard that was given to me by a fellow breeder. I don't know if they're considered heritage or not...I initially got them because ALBC lists them as critically endangered and authentic ones are very hard to come by.

I don't think I'm qualified to answer the question about Delawares but I have a few that were given to me. I'm raising them up along with my FR meat birds. I know there is a great contrast in the growth rate between a Freedom Ranger and a multi-purpose, but while I was told the Dels do grow fast, they can't hold a candle to the FRs. I think they grow faster than some multi-purpose but imo, not by much. They did grow faster than my RIR but, like I said not THAT much faster. I think that by 16 wks I could have processed them but I'm wanting them to to just a *little* bigger.

How often does the APA publish an updated SOP? When is the next one due to come out? I really need to buy one but will wait if it's being updated soon.

So, more or less, a "Heritage Breed" of chicken is a chicken that was recognized by the APA before 1951? Thats it?
