For all of you Barred Holland folks here is a link to excellent Dominique feather pattern. This is the same pattern as on Barred Hollands. See the APA Standard of Perfection description for both breeds.

You can also see feather patterns for many other breeds of fowl in this book. There are many usefull illustrations in this book.

It was written by Harry M. Lamon, Rob Roy Slocum in about 1920 and the title is The Mating and Breeding of Poultry. This is a great book for pre 1920 breed information. Here is the link

This is a wealth of heritage breed breeding information. Harry Lamon created the sought after Lamona breed. I hope you all enjoy. This has been one of my well kept secrets since I stumbled onto a copy of this book over 15 years ago. It will give you many ideas on bird selection for mating pens as well as whether you want to single or double mate your birds. This is a must read for any serious poultry breeder.

I have been fruitlessly searching for my standard since this dominique feather pattern discussion started.

I haven't read the entire discussion yet, but I begin to have an understanding of the double mating with the barred rock. I find it very interesting that a breed would be developed with this requirement to keep the right colors, basically two different varieties, because actually the feather pattern is different, showing the females \\from one and the males from the other. Sorry, got sidetracked with the Rocks. I know this is common in different breeds, but the barred rock discussion makes this concept understandable to a novice. Not doable, perhaps, but understandable, lol.

I still don't understand why the hollands would have a dominique pattern barring when they were bred with barred rock? Is the barred pattern affected by one of the other breeds? I Might have to wait on the new standards to re-read since I haven't been able to find mine.

My Hollands from Shelleyb are doing well, there are obviously 3 cockerels in the bunch. My pullet from this spring started laying and does indeed have white eggs! She is just so small! So what do you think about the color pattern on these two?

I just got out my standard an read what it says on the barred hollands and the explination of their plumage is the same as the Dominiques except the Doms under color is slate and the Barred Hollands is Light Gray.

I have only seen a few breeds of chickens mostly red ones but had to type in barred holland into my computer found this website and the picture from Dianne Jacky which may be the picture in the new standard. So I guess if you have something that they say is a barred Holland then compair this with the picture on this thread.

Sounds to me like a ten to twenty year project to get them to score 92 points. I had never seen one befor. As I saw I only look at Red chickens most of the time.

The APA has a booklet with old black and white Schilling pictures that is only $10.00 shipped for those folks who want good black and white pictures of many of the Heritage breeds. I don't know if the Holland is in there, but for that price it is a good reference booklet.

Are you talking about the booklet? I meant to get one so that I could tell people the breeds it does have in it. The new SOP will only have the white Holland.
