I have a question how do you like this penciling/color?

The penciling looks great. It is well down into the fluff and shank areas. I am assuming that the bright white in the photo of the hens is really more tan in color as it should be.

If you have a trio for foundation stock I would line breed each hen to the cockerel by either moving him to her or vice versa and keep track of what comes from who with a toe punch or bands. I think the hen with the black tail feathers will give you some great girls and the hen with more penciling in her tail will throw good cock birds.

How many birds do you have?

There is a ton of info on breeding the penciled pattern on google books. I would start with the Harry Lamon book link posted by biomistake it is an excellant read. I have many of them bookmarked you can email me and I can send them to you or just search Google books for breeding silver pencilled P Rocks or Wyandottes. You will find more info for breeding Dark Brahma though because 1923 or so is the copyright cutoff for old books.

Good luck with the birds

i only have a trio now & they came from Guy Roy I love this color pattern! I can't wait for them start start laying
ETA: yes the penciling is more of a tan color

What are you talking about? There should be no tan color on penciled breeds. Pretty much they have three colors, steel gray, black pencilings and black on the tail and wing feathers, and also white lacing the feathers on the neck.

Personel Message:

Bob I have a question. I got a strain of Rare Large Fowl that have Rose Combs that have good color and type but need work on their combs.

This is my question to you. I have a fair amount of space to raise these young birds this year, but I would like to learn to be better at culling the poorer comb birds and get them out of my pens to save on feed and space.

My question is how many chicks do you hatch and how many do you cull and what do you do with the excess birds that you do not keep for breeders for next year???

I have not read much on how many you need to raise per female and also what to do with the culls or birds that do not reach the desired type to improve their combs. Look forward to your suggestions.

New Breeder to Standard Breed Poultry.

Can anyone help me help this person? What do you do to improve Combs. What kind of goals do you have this year to improve head points on your large fowl. This will help everyone. Bob

The only advise I could give him on improving rose combs....when picking your breeders try to keep pullets that dont have a rough comb on top...smooth as possible. On the cockerels try to pick a bird that has a good spike and narrow comb....dont use a bird that looks like he has a tomato on top of his head...its a long process and will take generations to get the comb looking good. I always hate the combs that look like someone pressed their thumb down on top of the comb and left an impression.

I would raise as many chicks as possible...as long as you have room to grow them out, its a numbers game when you are trying to improve the combs, so the more shots you have at it, the more likely you might hit your target one or two times.

I wouldnt get obsessed with the combs to the point that I was culling birds with great type because their comb wasnt perfect...you dont want to throw the baby out with the bath water.

Bob,
Do you know if they over sized with a hollow center or if they are fairly flat with little to no points (bumps) on the top of the comb or a absent of a spike on the rear?

Chris

Congrats on the new Java Club; I honestly don't see how you can survive without dues, but that is up to y'all.

Just curious: How long have y'all raised Javas? Who did you get yours from? And, did y'all have any input into the Club from the original Java Club that was active for more than a decade but unfortunately is now defunct?
