I have (and recently) seen the heart break of Marek's disease running through entire flocks...by the time you see a bird stumble it is in the check out line and there is no cure.
It can take every bird you have. Every bird. Just imagine every bird you have dying, stumbling...it is both horrific and heart breaking, and it is easy to vaccinate for, even older birds can build an immunity to it.
It is recommended that you vaccinate day old chicks only because after that they are exposed, and every day they are exposed more.
Marek's is not prominent in every area, it is up here, and Newcastle is prominent in California.
I have heard Fowl Pox is only prominent down south ?
Don't know about disease down there.

Bob Blosl mentions in post#2509 abut putting eggs in hatch cages to identify each chick. Dose any body have pictures of some?

There is a vast difference in " a breeder" and a "multiplier" and don't feel bad if you don't feel up to the task. Very few can use that title acurately!!

Breeders are like chickens, it is hare to find the good ones. wink
A lot of people are self proclaimed breeders.

I agree, Chris. I have read more than one person claiming to be, "breeding," after just purchasing a trio of some breed. Frustrating as it is, I do think most of them have good intentions.

I think the term, "breeder," is misunderstood to some. I opened a thread with that very topic, a while back.... https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=392291 I think that many propagate and believe they are breeders. (My opinion, anyway.)

I doubt I will ever be able to hold the title of, "a breeder," as I imagine it takes years to learn all there is to learn.​

I will have to agree, love the chickens my grandma used to raise...my parents raised chickens growing up and then continued to pass them on to us. Showing in 4h was great and I even remember when we started to see the production birds enter the shows. Then it seemed like the old style birds were replaced with, for example the RIR went from the dark red almost black red to the very light reddish colors. Was good for us while we were showing

. But kinda sad how quickly they were disappearing. I love all chickens...but for us we choose to raise the birds grandma used to have. Just really like the looks.
