you take off one half point per extra point. He would have a one and half point cut. He still can win and be used as a breeder. You dont have to have five points on a birds head. Some of the top birds on champion row might have six or seven points. He would make a good breeder you just dont want all your birds with eight and ten point heads. Feet color and head points are two areas alot of people get screwing on. I was 22 years ago. bob

I'm getting both later this year sometime. I'm on the list with Kathyinmo on those great New Hampshires and have two strains of Rhode Island Reds coming, Some of Mr. Bennet's strain (Pine Grove) and some from your old Mohawk line.
I'm excited to get started.

You are getting some good chickens all of them. The New Hampsires from Kathy are killers. Your Reds are as good as they come. I also love your web site pictures. Your chicken house looks good enough to live in.
Hope to vistit you latter in the year when we get up to Aberdeen to check things out. bob

I was hoping someone might be able to give me a critique on this Dominique cockerel. I am not overly impressed with him. I know that his comb is incorrect as it doesn’t terminate in an upward turned spike. Also his back appears to be rather long perhaps and he doesn’t seem to have the concave sweep to the tail that is called for. He is younger and still filling out. Sorry that the picture is not great he wasn't being very helpful.

We'll be looking forward to it! And you are my 12 year old son's hero. lol He reads all your posts on here although I won't let him register himself until he's older. Believe it or not, a lot of the questions I've asked on genetics and stuff were his questions. He's got Asberger's Syndrome, a type of Autism, so he is amazingly intelligent on some things. And poultry is one of his main loves.
We are currently clearing out alot of our old hatchery stock and as soon as the weather breaks will be building several new breeder pens and I'm also planning on setting up a seperate building for incubating and brooding.
Once we get to that point we'll be ready to go!

Alright, I got the information on the lineage of some local NH's. They are Halback line NH's, Mr Miller got them from Jamie Parker when he got out of them in the 80s. The breeder I've been in contact with got them from Mike Miller last year, and will have some birds available for me this fall.

I'm no expert, but I think you're right on with this cockerel. However, do you have any more photos of him? How is his base width? Having a correct comb is nice, and very important, but there are many bloodlines out there with great combs and nothing else.

Also, we did a test hatch of a cockerel with a comb very similar to yours - he had very nice type and we wanted to see how his offspring would look on a few hens with type needing improvement, but better combs. All chicks came out with upturned spikes. So far they're only a few months along, so will have to wait and see perhaps this summer we might get another generation from them to see what's passing through, but I like the chicks far better than I liked the hens. We will also be breeding him to some rougher combed pullets in the spring to see if we can add a little more texture to his comb and a little less to theirs.

It's hard to tell with him walking, but his back does look a bit long. However, your opinion of him may change as he matures. He looks much nicer than about 80% of photos that I see on the web for Dominiques. No, he's not SOP, but he's not garbage either. He looks like he's carrying his breast rather well (again, tough to tell with this photo), nice bright yellow legs and might turn out to be a nice cock once he's given some more time for that tail to come in. I know I want to cull ever cockerel on the place at that age - lol they always look unimpressive with their tails at that stage!

Get some more photos if you can, and keep everyone posted! Where did you get this trio? What's the type like on your hens?
