I already have LF Blue Cochins, so I don't want another feather-footed breed like the Dark Brahmas. What can anyone tell me about heritage Wyandotte's? I know they take cold, but are they good winter layers? Slow growing? I had some hatchery SLW last year that were given to me after Easter. I didn't like them -- sold them all at a fall swap. I know "real" Wyandotte's would be different.

Becky

The wyandottes I had were nonstop excellent birds, healthy and solid non stop layers. even through winter with no additional lighting, they were non stop layers.
Peaceful, healthy, big breasted birds, very good at free ranging and very upset if I did not let them out to go do so.
I really enjoyed them.

Look at the 4"sections of fence wire next to him..for now, .and tomorrow, I promise, that DH and I will go measuer the big baby.
But seriously, everyone else with this line has the same big birds.
So. why is everyone so surprised ?
Did you think RIW were little ?
They are big, slow growing ..must be the leghorn in them ?
Walt this is the biggest, big baby !!

I don't think they are little, just surprised they are so tall.

Hey Walt- It was so good to see you this weekend at Stockton. And all the info was very helpful. It was good to finally put a face to the name. I have some more questions just wanted to say thanks. I'll PM you soon~ Tacey

By the way all- some really nice LF heritage birds being represented at Stockton. Lots of Plymoth rocks all colors, some of the whites were stunning! There were also some nice and dark RIR, and even 1 Delaware. No Javas or New Hampsires. Out of about 2300+ birds there were only 82 LF in the American class.
I personally will try to improve that # next year. We need to show off our georgious American classbirds!

Nice meeting you as well! The largest LF class was the AOSB class (188) where the Best of Show and Res of Show came from. (BOS Asil, ROS Araucana)
It is very unusual for a LF to be Best of Show at Stockton. It is usually a bantam or waterfowl for some reason.

Chickielady, your "MOT" is beautiful! What a nice comb he has!

Now, as for his height, I noticed the fence section was the width of my pinkie figernail. I believe he is over two feet tall. Genetics being only part of the equation, do you think he might have had a better diet than other birds? MOT is definitely a healthy boy.

When I was little, my parents got a beautiful rooster. "Whitey" (come on, we were kids and not original at all) was a standard Golden Comet (red sex link from the early 1970s). Whitey was HUGE. And he died of old age as a teenager! I've not seen a rooster that big in years until I started seeing Jersey Giants in person at swaps this last year.

So with my rambling aside, I try to keep up with these threads. I'm interested in Heritage breeds, but don't have a favorite yet. I'm absorbing all these tips and hints for raising healthy birds. Hopefully I can meet some wonderful BYC folks at a future show.

If any of you within, oh, about an eight hour drive of Southeast Virginia have eggs or chicks for sale, please speak up! Lol.

Hi Charlie

Thanks for the info on the RC RIRs, I will contact him,

I saw the listing of the Narragansetts on Duanes listing, but thought they were hatchery birds so I will contact him on them too.

I have seen some big roos in other heritage breeds, the biggest we had was a Barred Rock, and next was a White Rock, both weighed over 14 lbs, and were half again the size of the other roosters. It does happen now and then,

ChickieLady are you keeping him for a breeder? It would be very ineresting to see if he passes this on. Nice comb on him too.

I'm still trying to figure of why Chickielady's R.I. Whites are upright in stance.

Chris

has the RIW had dedicated breeders like RIR? I don't think so they are a work in progress and are getting there
