i have been lied to by the Connatser family, come to find out they have been lying to everyone who has been buying birds all these years. i am sorry for lying to you guys, i just told you all what they told me. if they are heritage birds then good, but probaby they are most like likely hatchery stock. that picture of the rhode island reds he told me they were his and he gave me that picture through email and said they were his and really they were somebody elses. I am so mad at them!!!! I paid good money for them and they are not true heritage breeds. I guess i'll stick with hatcheries then. until i find a true breeder. now those pics of the rhode island red and barred are actually mine from my flock, they look like a heritage bird, but are they really? thank-you all for being understanding!

Hey, don't say sorry for "lying to us." You didn't know better, you just thought they were telling the truth. An honest mistake. That really does stink & you have a right to be mad. The same thing happens with Amerucanas. Some people take images from other breeders that have the real thing, when they have Easter Eggers to make extra money of them. There are a couple people on here that have true R.I. Reds, and I'm sure they would be willing to set you up. Don't give up if you really want them!

M

i know a breeder who for sure has true ameraucanas. he breeds them and so did his father. i know he shows them sometimes but it's been a couple of years since he has. he also fools with rabbits too. does anyone know him? his last name is davis, i don't know his first. i think in a couple of years i may switch to ameraucanas. and he has a half-way decent price on them.

Taylor,
Just consider it a lesson learned; yes, it cost you some money (I'm not going to ask how much because that ain't my business). In life some lessons are harder than others, but if we learn from them then we grow and that type of growth is generally good.

If you want some really knock your socks of Reds then you need to join the RIR Club and work thru the members there. They have the real deal and will be a great help to you.

I do hope that in this learning process you didn't become angry at those of us who were only raising questions for your good. That is not always an easy pill to swallow I know, but we meant no harm only good. Besides, we weren't taking your money and had nothing to gain but your growth.

Thanks Guys. I need to join some breed clubs and network there. You are all a great resource!! I'm hopeing to find some really nice Plymouth Rocks. I have some Jersey Giants in the incubator and under 2 broodies, They should hatch next week. I'm excited. The Plymouth Rocks should round out what I want nicely.

thank you all who have been understanding. i am glad you all questioned me what i posted because it made me wonder about them too, then i finally figured they were liars. i just feel for the others they have backstabbed over the years.

I have a question about hatching egg viability.

We did a few hatching eggs presales this spring. Our Buff Orpingtons did not cooperate and started laying late. Anyway we shipped some eggs to a lady at her Post Office Box in Sumas, Washington. Mailed the box Priority Mail Flat Rate on 5/17/11. About two weeks ago i received an email from the USPS stating the item had not been picked up and after the 15 days, it was being returned to me. tried calling the buyer. tried calling the PO. No answer from either. I did a Yahoo search for her phone. It was a British Colombia number. CANADA! OOps, no shipping papers for there. The eggs arrived today at our house.

The eggs have been in a well packed carton for 6 (six) weeks. Should I open them, candle them and set any that are not spoiled. Or just toss the box before it explodes?

Have started a thread just for this question.

ETA: One egg was broken. Smelled a bit bad. The rest seem alright. None cloudy or dark. Am considering setting them.

It sounds stupid but Google "Top Ten Rhode Island Red Breeders" you'll find what you are looking for with in the first 5 links.

I will state up front that I do not have any hatching experience personally; but in preparation for giving it a go, I bought a book devoted to just hatching. An interesting read.

The age of the eggs do effect hatchability and the temperature that they are held at. You could do your own little experiment, give it a go and see if any are viable; or go stinky and explode. I hear that happens sometimes. IF I didn't need the chicks, I'd toss them and avoid the possibility of a stinky mess!

I just started the incubator again on June 19. I took a few eggs from my current broody hen "Twinkle". Sitting on my counter were eggs from late March. So I added them.

The old eggs have huge air cells. Of the 18, two were cloudy and dark at Day 4 or so. I tossed those. I candled random eggs yesterday and could not make out veinning in the old eggs. A few of the fresh eggs had tiny veins. I will candle everybody tomorrow or Friday and let you know how the March eggs look.

This think is proper for posting here since American games are heritage and they are larger than their OEGB kin. More apt to get productive inputs here than in game thread.

I am having an ongoing problem with cocci hammering some of my chicks. The affected chicks are American game from family line kept in Inidiana. I presently live in central Missouri and brought some of that line with me. In Indiana, virtually all chicks were free ranged and were never medicated for cocci. Cocci there was not a problem for those games even though it did affect our meat and egg production chicks. Now that I am trying to breed games in same manner as done in Indiana, cocci are effectively preventing my games from reproducing with nearly 100% loss of chicks. Half-siblings of same chicks, regardless of which parent is game, are largely unaffected. Crosses not intentional for most part but involved either red jungle fowl or dominique. This forcing me to consider introducing new blood / genetics for the purpose of disease resistance. Sometimes a closed flock is not so good, especially if too few birds make it up. I hope to find games in Missouri with resistance to the local cocci so I can fix problem. Man am I ticked!
