I wish I lived closer to Pensacola, as I live in Michigan. Maybe someday, It would make for a very nice vacation. Good luck with the show. Cheers

What are the hot needs this year for Heritage Large Fowl.? Last year it was New Hampshire's and Barred Rocks.

For me it is Rhode Island Red Large Fowl. Just not enough people to supply the demand. Matt 1616 told me he has order's for ten people on his large fowl Mohawks. Hard to be leave.

I have had a lot of orders for my old White Plymouth Rock large fowl. It is a old strain about 60 years old.

Hope I can hatch enough chicks. will be shipping ten four week old chicks when ready overnight express.

This is a safe and affordable way to get started and have enough chicks to get a good start with.

How many eggs would you have to have sent to you to hatch ten chicks? bob

Bob,
My "Need List" is looking more and more like a want list.
I'm going to get a hold of Dick Horstman and get some of his Barred, White, Partridge Rocks off him and then this fall I am going to talk to Denny Myers and see if I can get some Bantam Reds off him.
Then if everything go's right this time next year I will be building a new 10 x 40 breeding barn.

Have you seen Dennis Meyers Bantams? He was a great large fowl breeder and should be able to do the same with bantams. Also, if you get partridge large fowl I have a friend who has his line for about three years and is improving them. Maybe in two years you can share blood and help improve the color and size. bob

Chris,
As I've tried to explain to my wife many times need & want mean exactly the same thing.

I have had a need list which I got today I am just trying to keep what I have. I talked to a fellow today at the Library who I helped about five years ago get some breeds . He spun himself into a mess got to many breeds could not get rid of excess stock and ended up giving up chickens and waterfowl. He went to quick to fast and just made a mess of things. The increase in feed prices did him in. He has only one breed of geese, no ducks or chickens. He told me he is trying to get some weird chicken from Turkey or something and maybe some jungle fowl. I don't know why people do this but it seems to be they want so many breeds cant do justice to the ones they have and give up.. Lee Roy Jones had a term. Here today Gone Tomorrow chicken people. That is why there are so few people who breed the good old Standard birds.

Ralph Brazelton had the best advice and I took this to the Bank. Go Slow, Go Small and Go Down the Middle of the Road. What do most do go Big Go Fast and are all over the place.

I have four breeds of chickens. I am going to get out of two breeds and go with just Reds and White Rocks. Maybe with the remainder of time I got to be a breeder I can improve and keep the blood
lines going. I would like some Frizzle Seroma reds some day. New York Reds keep your eyes open for me.

Your right Bob. I have had over 10 different breeds in the last five years. My love has always been toward heritage breeds though..I will say, I have been very impressed with the coronation sussex as far as feathering out fast, and great layers. My plans now are to get rid of most of the birds I have now, and get heritage rir's, nh and barred rocks, and stick with these breeds. I might add a line or two, but these three breeds are the ones I'm really fond of. Then you see silver laced birds like Matt has, and its hard not to want some though. I have the buff and gold laced brahma's, and really like their looks, but 10 months old and still no eggs makes me reconsider. Many people think they will make alot of money in chickens, but if you add the cost of feed, along with your time and I just can't see it happening. If I can make enough to help pay the feed bill I will continue to have them as a hobby. I'm glad we have people like Bob to help preserve the heritage breeds, along with helping people make contact with those that have good heritage lines.

I too became enamored with too many breeds, but pretty quickly decided that I did not have the time nor the funds to do much with all of them. I am not sure it was such a bad idea to have several for a year or so to decide which ones I really like. I ultimately settled on just two. I have some Silver Laced Wyandottes that I really like, and those Mohawk Reds have finally decided that they can lay pretty good. I was just thinking yesterday that maybe I should just settle in with those as I really like them, but the Silver's do ad some color to the yard. If I am home I let the reds and the silvers out on alternate days and love looking out and seeing that great lacing on the Silver's. I have a good friend here that has some of each of the breed with the same lines, so hopefully we can keep some of our best and help each other improve.

And Bob you are so correct it is soooo much less costly to start with chicks than it is to start with eggs. Cant tell you how much cash I have thrown out the window trying to hatch shipped eggs. The only luck I had was with some Jersey Giants and I no longer have any as they just didnt work out for me.
