I will help you with these if you like Kim. We could do it with pictures or you could come by. I think this bird has some good qualities. the tail as you say is way too high.the wings look OK in the picture, but you see him walking around and I don't. He appears to have good size and color. It appears that he has very good feather width in the tail feathers. I think you could use him. Walt

here are 3 more old book titles for kindle that are worth the read..one gives details from the day of judging , point deduction examples..with understandable descriptions

Thank you Walt. I have some youngsters growing out. This Fall, I want to assess all the Dorkings and decide which are best for breeding. I would so appreciate your help.

Bob, I couldn't tell/decide whether this guy has better type than my other males. That's why I asked, since Walt has seen one in person and photos of some of my hens. The lady that had this guy has some very chunky birds, all good weight, but not quite right in shape.
There are many more places to get Silvers this year than last, but I haven't found any breeder with cockerels that look good. I think I'm going to stick with with the strains that I have and see what I can do.

I used to be happy with my flock until I got the SOP. Now I see every bird has good parts and bad parts. It's difficult to figure out which are best. I know to look for type first, but the differences are subtle at this point.

Thank you

You have learned a lot.

Go to page 57 and you will see E B Thompson in his conditioning house. I read his book 25 years ago and lost it. I don’t think I shared this one with you. Also check out the pictures of a male and female Plymouth Rock page 36 fantastic painting by Schilling. So if you have Rocks that is that kinds of type you want also notice the tight feather they have not a common big fluffy loose feathered kind. This can be corrected just increase the egg production about 25 eggs per pullet year. Enjoy this book Mr. Robinson injured his back in a accident and could be not a Poultry Farmer so he started to write articles for Poultry Magazines. He was so good he got some deals to write books and wrote many. One of the best Poultry writers ever but he knew how to get good interviews and was close to many of the top breeders. He was very close to E B Thompson and also got ads from him for the magazines and this gave him good commissions for selling them. Enjoy one of my favorite books. bob

go to page 75 of the Robinson book and see a set of pictures of dorkings bob

I'm always looking for actual photographs of the old Dorkings. There aren't many to be found, most are drawings or paintings.

That is a good book. The comments about the Dorkings make it sound as if they were just as bad in the 20's as now. When I spoke to Craig Russell, he said there was a time when you would see many good examples at shows. I would love to see a photograph of a Silver that is very close to the Standard.

Thanks,
Kim
