lol, just trying to find out more about these birds of mine. You piqued my interest... now in research mode.

Google brings up everything except meaningful info.

Laying out the new run and coop today. With as much as it's costing, I better be able to get some good breeders out of them. I figure I'll break even in maybe a hundred years. But I love the breed and with help from those of you with more knowledge and experience than myself, maybe someday I can have a flock that will produce some show winners.

I can dream can't I?

Break even ? ? ?

I keep digging and digging . . .

Quote: yeah. Roughly two acres fenced and cross fenced with 6' chain link, electrical hot wire around each run, custom coops, new feeders and waterers, changing the feed to up the protein, two new duck ponds, custom incubator building with new incubators by spring I hope, new brooders....

I have lost my mind.

Oh well. I don't drink, chew or gamble.... every man needs a vise. I guess mine is poultry.

could be worse.

Who did you get them from again? Was it Rademacher?
I believe he has Rick Bonds old stuff, There good birds with very good potential.
I'll see if I can find some of the info I have on his stock.

Bob,
Thank you so much for sharing on how to improve the feathering. I appreciate it. From what I have seen in Sussex,
this is an on going challenge which needs attention every generation or the birds start to look like Orpingtons.

Thanks Chris, Yes they are Rademacher Birds. My partner in these (Junior) bought them as chicks direct from him both last year and this year. I also have some growing birds I hatched out from last year's birds. He is busy right now with some personal stuff, so the flock is here now, but I'm getting him some stock built up so he can work on them too next spring. We are only about 3 hours away from each other, so will be able to trade out some birds every few years if we need to and still have the same strain. Right now I've only got around 35 or 40 head, mostly this years young stock and am still incubating every egg I get. We are also going to be working together on my Dominiques from Mr. Post if everything goes to plan. It's nice to have a buddy with the same birds and goals to work with.

Any info you can get me will be appreciated. I sit in the coop with them almost every day looking at the SOP and the black and white APA standard illustrations by Shilling, but I'm still learning, trying to soak up everything I can on them. I've got several breeds of "Heritage Large Fowl" but these are my favorites by far I think.

I need to get some new pictures soon too.

Quote: Yes it makes no difference what breed they have to have good feather quality and this is something we are loosing in our birds. Some Wyandotte’s are so poor in feather quality they can not breed naturally or you have to pull their feathers out from their vents during breeding season because of the fluff. You be surprised how it improves the birds looks and they will still be round like they are suppose to be.

In regards to Radamaker line it is an old line about 35 year old he has some of Franklin J young’s birds and Rev. John Melcherts birds from the 1960s. I know Rick Bond but I don’t know what is going on with his large fowl. He had a very good strain of Red Bantams with good type.

It would be nice to see pictures of these Reds latter when they are full grown. Just worry about type and good heads this year and they will be fine. It’s a old strain.

I hope Radamker did not cross any new blood onto his line. His females have changed in appearance as today have a bump in the middle of their back like a cushion. Never seen this before in a large fowl red.

Hi Robert,

It's always educational reading when I get to your posts.

I have the book "Call of the Hen" Its a great read! I'm working on depth of abdomen along with width of the pubic bones right now.

I raise Andalusian large fowl and their production isn't great, not always but sometimes a few of them don't start laying until they're 8 or 9 months old! So, tight, early feathering will increase production? Are early tail feathers the only sign to look for in your pullets?

I have also started (just this spring) on creating my own Andalusian bantams. I am using a leghorn bantam on a small hen. I have 9 chicks on the ground... and now the mother has decided to be broody! lol! I haven't been able to hatch much in the past couple years but this year I'm really working on it. This is also the year that we, personally, have dubbed "The Year of the Hen" as we have had a record number of girls decide they want to be Mamas. Ten of them! They're helping me with my hatching so I really appreciate it... particularly the brooding/rearing part!

Can you please show your website address? I had it at one time but I think that was a different computer.

Thanks so much for all your help.

That's a nice blue female. This is a very hard color pattern and not many ever ever did well with them. Where did you get your start from?

Did you ever read my article on starting Black Java Bantams in the Poultry Press? It would help you on your bantam program. I took Mohawk large fowl and shrunk them down to bantams and it is a hard thing to do but it can be done? bob
