Looking for a meaty, good winter laying bird that isn't fluffy? I think the Chanteclers fit the bill.
I have had Partridge Chanteclers for 3 years now. They don't get as big as the Whites (I believe) but my boys process out at 5+ pounds at 22-24 weeks.

The girls are pretty too!

Ooooo! Do you have roosters too?

I'd like to see pics of them as well!

Edited to ask: How do they do in the heat of summer? I have very hot summers and very cold winters here. I'm confident that they could handle the cold as that is what they were bred for. But heat?

We get pretty warm here too but most evenings are cooler. Up to 95F for most of the summer and spikes a up to 100F on very warm days. Down to -22F here in the winter, but again, not for long periods.

Here are some of the cockerels I have had in the last few years. I am still working on the breed and I think I am making some headway. The cockerels I have this year are the best so far but no pictures of them yet, sorry.

Catching up . . . . .
Quote: Just the answer I needed to a question posted elsewhere; I have the parts to make a plucker, for the drill; I will NEVER had pluck again. 6 geese in Feb was a big lesson well learned.

we switched to all heirloom this year and saved a lot of seed for next year. i feel like this is the way to go. stop buying hybrid and gmo products. plant heirloom and save your seeds every year and you will have better crops each year. you also save money from buying seed every year.
why is our country allowing this? because of the corruption and crony capitalism that is going on with all elected officials from both parties with the exception of the tea party and libertarians.
we need a new party that represents 'we the people'.
Years ago the seed catalogs carried a larger variety of seeds; the pickings have become slim in recent years. I love reading the catalogs of the old varieties, so many interesting varieties to try. And self sustaining as you said.

Would love to see the old victory gardens to make a come back.

Quote: YUP!! My dogs eat better than most people. Have you seen what is packed in kids lunchboxes these days? Not even fit for a dog.

Quote: I am less concerned about salmonella and e. coli because I don't drop every dead carcass in a common bath of water that just spreads the bacteria to every carcass. IMO that is how entire batches of chicken gets contaminated. I do think your suggestion is just plain good sense though.

Quote: I prefer a roasted bird; I will stew it after if I'm making soup. Definitely need the skin. lol.

THe slaughter house near me (20 min) has handles my BBW turkeys for $10 each; chickens are $5. DH won't do the killing so he is willing to pay the $5; I'm too yankee frugle to spend the money. I think I convinced him to help dress IF I do the killing. I"m dredding it . . . culling is still hard for me. Maybe it shouldn't be easy.
Gorgeous birds! I'm also taking a note..... look into partridge chanteclers!
Wow 5# carcass is a decent size. Hmmmm.

I took a few pics of heritage birds at a show, it was crowded in the isles and some reason my camera lens had fog, probably because it was so cool outside and the camera was in the car overnight..so did the best I could .

Wyandottes
