Quote: Just the answer I needed to a question posted elsewhere; I have the parts to make a plucker, for the drill; I will NEVER had pluck again. 6 geese in Feb was a big lesson well learned.
Years ago the seed catalogs carried a larger variety of seeds; the pickings have become slim in recent years. I love reading the catalogs of the old varieties, so many interesting varieties to try. And self sustaining as you said.we switched to all heirloom this year and saved a lot of seed for next year. i feel like this is the way to go. stop buying hybrid and gmo products. plant heirloom and save your seeds every year and you will have better crops each year. you also save money from buying seed every year.
why is our country allowing this? because of the corruption and crony capitalism that is going on with all elected officials from both parties with the exception of the tea party and libertarians.
we need a new party that represents 'we the people'.
Would love to see the old victory gardens to make a come back.
Quote: YUP!! My dogs eat better than most people. Have you seen what is packed in kids lunchboxes these days? Not even fit for a dog.
Quote: I am less concerned about salmonella and e. coli because I don't drop every dead carcass in a common bath of water that just spreads the bacteria to every carcass. IMO that is how entire batches of chicken gets contaminated. I do think your suggestion is just plain good sense though.
Quote: I prefer a roasted bird; I will stew it after if I'm making soup. Definitely need the skin. lol.
THe slaughter house near me (20 min) has handles my BBW turkeys for $10 each; chickens are $5. DH won't do the killing so he is willing to pay the $5; I'm too yankee frugle to spend the money. I think I convinced him to help dress IF I do the killing. I"m dredding it . . . culling is still hard for me. Maybe it shouldn't be easy.
