Bob Blosl's Heritage Large Fowl Thread

It does that now and then and someone has to kick the can down the road. I get blamed some times by some of my Show people who come to this web site that I use tricky tactics to get you folks to respond. You got to do something some times. This tread is a educational treat to take people who are feed store chicken collectors and to try to turn them into Preservationist. Only one in 300 will stick and do it. The rest will revert back to getting the mutts from the feed store. Thats ok. Not every one can do this. I am now into Gardening and preservation of plants. My wife has me working like a slave. I just got a big pick up load of Compost dirt from the land fill. Putting it out and then getting ready to plant her plants for her.

Now I got to go out and wash some white chickens. Its called Laundering your chickens. I should put them into the Washing machine but they dont know how to swim. I am making a pen above the ground that has wire on the bottom and plastic all around the sides and ends a solar dryer and then I got to was chickens for three days befor a show in seven days.

Has anyone seen Bobby's Rhode Island Red male that he won at Lucas ville Ohio last weekend? Boy he is a killer.

Dave Anderson told me yesterday that it was one of the best RIR's he has ever seen. I used to throw the call ducks in the shower to wash them.

May be the sister to this long backed male. A male like this a Ckl is what Schilling talked about in the 1950s that he would like to paint a Standard Cut for Ckls. In his mind this is what a Ckl should look like then when he molts and is s18 months old he would be equal to his cut that he made in the 1962 Standard of Perfection. Notice the head on this male, his comb and blade. Length of body, level brick shaped and yet he still has some more to finish out in a month or so.

He will be a killer cock bird next year. I am sure there is a brother of this male that should be very close to his scoring. Bobby repeat the mating of this birds parents till they die. Congratulation on one heck of a R I Red. For those who go to feed stores who are lurking on this thread this is the correct color and shape of a R I Red.

Found the picture of the pullets. Look at the female in the back against the wall. May be this guys sister. Thats the lenth this strain needs. Shes my $100 pullet.

I believe I took a picture of Bobby's bird on Champion Row. I'm not sure whose it was though?

I've been showing the pictures to people up here trying to show them what the breed actually looks like. They ask "Why is that Rhode Island Red black?" and I try to explain it to them...they just can't understand how a bird that is bred to standard can look so different than one you buy from a hatchery.

Because of my post I am getting flooded with people wanting hatching eggs? Walt isn't this normal of the mind set. But they cant get over why they look different than the ones they buy at the feed store. If you go to Bing.com and type in Rhode Island Red Chickens you will see at least 500 pictures pop up. About 25 of them are the Correct Rhode Island Reds and 2/3 of them are Red Bantams. Why is it a person can except that Red Bantams are dark feathered, but large fowl are suppose to look like a Red Bay horse in color.

We just don't get no Respect. Lets face it the Production Red has and always will steel the thunder of the Rhode Island Red true to breed bird. The Rhode Island White people tried to do it 60 or so years ago and ride the glory of the 5,000 members of the R I Red Club but never could get off the ground. The birds were not even related. They just stole the name and put white in front of it.

It was mostly a promotion by hatchery owners to sell chicks.

Any way we are slowly coming back and promoting the breed which is still rare to find. Do your home work and you wont find these on E bay.
