I guess I said that wrong, I meant that standard wise they have a different type, and coloration. Theyre supposed to be a lighter red then the RIR and a slate bar, though Im not sure about the hackle coloration. Im not really sure about where I was going saying they were developed at the same time as the RIR. I thought that the PC RIR was started when Metcalf sent eggs out to RIR breeders and they called them PC RIR, but Im guessing you know more then I do.
Back when the Red was being developed there were three comb types for the Reds two of which are in the Standard of Perfection. The Single and Rose Comb were excepted into the SoP but the Pea comb was not so most of the Pea comb Red were bred, shown and sold as the Buckeye breed. Over time the Red was bred into the "true" Buckeye breed because of this.

oh this is very neat! Where do you get this rubberized roofing?
===================
Walt, and Bob, we so appreciate your coming here to teach us. This is my main  thread on BYC. I only browse all the other threads.
I send newcomers here because I know your teaching is so valuable and willl save them years of mistakes and heartbreak.
I was heartbroken when Mr. Miller left the SOP thread. He actually knew Wid Card and I had so much wanted to discuss my fav author with him.
But ya'll are still here and we on this thread have such a valuable doorway into veteran breeding wisdom. I come from 15 yrs. in
the dog world and am here to tell you  that ,there, it takes years to make the contacts to get such veteran breeders to share their
knowledge as we have here in poultry  just for the listening.
Is there anyone here who doesn't know that Walt is Head of the  APA Standard Committee and that he , Bob Blosi and NYREDS ,among others here, have 1/2 century each experience in poultry breeding?
Thanks veteran breeders and judges for taking your valuable time and sharing with us,
 Karen

X 2 to all including the part about Mr. Miller.

I knew you were old enough to remember him. ahahaha

When he shook hands with a person a Buckeye nut would end up in your hand. Vickie....if he told you RIR's were introduced to Buckeye's would you believe him? I did..maybe I should have asked someone on BYC........oh that's right BYC wasn't around in the 60's.

The old timers did all kinds of hybridization that was word of mouth and was never recorded.....some of what they did wasn't even shared with friends.

I think that it is great that some of the folks on here study the roots of breeds, but I have a lot of experience with that as we research how things happened and how it relates to the APA SOP. There is nothing wrong with questioning things, but there are several ways to do that without sounding as if you are an 'expert" that has all the answers. Nobody has all the answers.

Walt
Walt,

As you and I know, what Grant Malone told you about Buckeyes, or pretty much any other breed , you could take to the bank. I learned a lot from him by LISTENING to a master. Never have learned anything while running my mouth yet !

Me too. Bob, Walt, NYREDS are all valuable to this thread. If I've forgotten anyone, I apologize. I learn a lot coming to this thread and without our OTs, it would shrivel up and die.

You guys need to know you are valuable and I agree with whomever said "don't let those young whippersnappers run you off".

You are appreciated very very much.

Quote From OSUman:
The R.I. Red got it's Pea Comb from the Chittagong Fowl (Brahma). The Pea Comb is dominate over other combs so as soon as the gene was introduced the offspring would have had Pea Type Comb until bred out.

Holly Crap Walt. After I read your post I had to go out and grab Mr. Silkie and talk to him. I even put him in a new pen next to one of my Buff Brahma males.

He said Walt will get over it just like you do when you get ****** off on the experts on this site.

I did get some nice phone calls today. I got a call from my friend Charlie in Minnesota. I think that's how you spell that state its way up north past Memphis.
He has ROSE COMB R I Reds and plans to raise 300 next year and share 200 with beginners and the youth. That is nice.

Then I got a email from a fellow who is from Oregon who is about 50 years old and coming back to show chickens after a long break raising kids. His youngest daughter has the hots to play with dirt show chickens and have livestock. Thats great. Going to fix him up with some of those famous Mohawk large chickens and some of those Mohawk bantams. I have been praying along with Mr. Silkie for another partner in my bantams and God has sent him to me.

So we can ****** sometimes on this site but if we can just help 1/2 of 1% of the feed store chicken collectors my lifetime will be well served.

New York Reds those red bantam chicks from your male are looking better. I got a ckl thats making me slobber when I look at him and when I slopper he is a killer.

You all have a nice night and maybe we will get back to breeding chickens and not worry about genetics and all that other stuff. Its to hard to understand and all the old guys never be leaved in that stuff anyway.

If I just could figure out how to breed Buff Brahmas for color I would be happy. Any suggestions from the experts?

Quote: I had to laugh at that Walt, because you are so right. I am studying, learning, growing and have 40+ years raising poultry and to be honest?

I'm not even sure I know most of the correct QUESTIONS, much less the answers.

You will always have some people who think they know it all, but just don't forget that there are a lot of us out here too that are listening. I am amazed sometimes that you, along with several others take the time to mess with us and our crazy questions.

hope you dont feel like that walt..everybody loves you in here.sometimes people just get excited about something and want to know lot more about it.to a fault .to me it screams rir..maybe its the artists eye looking at detail...dont get upset..just take a deep breath.. you a/re an asset to byc...we all get discouraged time to time..let me tell you, im the queen of discouragement..from another perspective.sometimes the older poultry judges are funny too about who gets any info or birds, i experienced this myself from a freind who is also apa judge , love him dearly but.....if i asked him to get me certian birds he would always give them to my neighbors, that was hurtful like you cant imgagine to me.they would show up at shows with birds i had asked for..imagine how that feels., i felt tears welling up at one show when i saw the neighbors new birds there..so hurt was kind of an understatement..so i decided to just quit asking questions and quit asking for birds..figured it out myself.i had cash in hand for those birds too, only somone else got them...bought some birds from some nice people in here..you should have seen the look on all of their faces when they took my bird to champion row..shock i think was the expression..so just that you know..the experiences for the new peope is not always wine and roses with the apa judges too...white orp and buff are prefered table birds and they cooked a lot of marans when i was in europe..
