I have a very odd question. As I sat back cleaning my SOP off (didn't realize that drying peppers would drip their liquid on the table...), I wondered if there were any remaining copies of the 1874 Standard of Perfection?


Has anyone ever seen one? Know of anyone that has one? Random thoughts of the day. These things tend to happen alot.

Sorry armchair experts, but Reds have been put into Buckeyes. The SOP does not say that and anyone who uses wiki as a reference is just naive, I can go there right now and post that RIR's were put into Buckeyes and then it is true. lol. I am not saying that this was done when they were first developed, (because I will admit to know knowing...unlike the "experts").....but I have also heard of this occurring. I had heard this directly from Grant Malone the biggest promoter of Buckeyes ever. You won't believe the people who really know what they are talking about, but you believe everything some newbie posts here. This is what is discouraging to the old timers that try to help you .Reading certain publications is a way to begin to learn, but people like Bob have talked to thousands of people raising birds over the years and has insight that you folks just don't have and more than likely will never have because of your narrow views and limited information.

This kind of thing reminds me of a bunch of adolecents that know everything and their parents don't know squat. I can't speak for Bob, but I can tell you that this kind of stuff makes me want to stop coming here. Why try to help people when they already know more than I do. I gotta say that I wish I could have learned this so fast and saved all that time the last 50 years. I am always surprised that I have learned so little compared to the folks of BYC. Maybe I need to go study Wiki.

BTW: LF Cochins are used as meat in other countries and in at least 5 high end eateries here in Napa/Sonoma. You pay extra for them lol.

Walt--who would referee and help us newbies sort out fact from fiction. I think these posts are written with the conviction of their beliefs in their facts, which is fine and good for discussion; without the OT's, how is one to know information is not correct until the learned share their knowledge.
I felt like I was watching a tennis match--with no winner, until Walt stepped in.

This tends to happen in the over 50 crowd!! ANd the wise beyond their years younger people.

hope you dont feel like that walt..everybody loves you in here.sometimes people just get excited about something and want to know lot more about it.to a fault .to me it screams rir..maybe its the artists eye looking at detail..it kind of shouts at you..from another perspective.sometimes the older poultry judges are funny too about who gets any info or birds, i experienced this myself from a freind who is also apa judge , love him dearly but.....if i asked him to get me certian birds he would always give them to my neighbors, that was hurtful like you cant imgagine to me.they would show up at shows with birds i had asked for..imagine how that feels., i felt tears welling up at one show when i saw the neighbors new birds there..so hurt was kind of an understatement..so i decided to just quit asking questions and quit asking for birds..figured it out myself.i had cash in hand for those birds too, only somone else got them...bought some birds from some nice people in here..you should have seen the look on all of their faces when they took my bird to champion row..shock i think was the expression..so just that you know..the experiences for the new peope is not always wine and roses with the apa judges too...white orp and buff are prefered table birds and they cooked a lot of marans when i was in europe..

Thanks for the kind words, I'm not going anywhere, just wanted to get that off my chest. The APA only tests for the judges apility to judge birds and says that they can't get drunk in public etc, etc......but we can't assure that they are good guys/women. We hope they will be helpful. I come to these threads as an officer of the APA and try to keep things accurate when the APA is being bashed or someone has a question about the APA and at the same time, try to help folks with their questions.....if I know the answer. I have given the wrong info on here a couple times, so there is nothing wrong with questioning a statement, but the person better know what they are talking about if they want to be an authority on poultry...

APA officers, judges etc .....we are all just people who have volunteered to perform a service for the APA and hopefully for poultry breeders as well. Once you get more than one person involved, you run the risk of having a judge or whatever end up being a jerk. If it something that is really out of line there are remedies. They are just judges, they ain't gods...they have the same failings we all have...and some don't remember very well, but don't want to look it up cuz it is uncool to bring out your SOP at a show even when the APA requires that they have it with them.

lol....yes...the mistakes I have made on here have been when I didn't look something up. When I was young and newly licensed a well respected old time judge, Ben Wilson, told me while we judging together that a good judge should read the SOP every day. At that time everything was still fresh in my mind cuz I just passed the test and I remember thinking.....poor old guy is losing it.. Well now I can't remember things in breeds that I kept for years.......that is a little scary. Ben Wilsons advice was very good advice.

I will take that as a compliment that I am wise beyond my years! I also had random thoughts of bacon the other day as well. Those were tad more "out there" than the Standard!

I have an 1875 but have never seen an 1874.
