Glad to be a part of BYC! New to chicken keeping, was thrown into it when a beautiful rooster appeared in my garden 3 months ago. After asking all the neighbours if they had lost one of their flock to which they all replied no (to be honest, I was relieved when they said no as our neighbours in the small French hamlet in which we live tend to rear chickens for food so he would have been heading for the pot!), it seemed that "Brian" was to become one of our family. He was obviously pretty lonely so after we built him a comfy house and the safety of a large run with an electric fence we bought him some hens to make friends with. I am loving being a chicken carer. I have of late had lots of chicken health problems which I hope someone maybe able to help me with (will start a new thread). Looking forward to reading and sharing with fellow chicken carers!

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! How nice of you take "Brian" in and get him some lady friends. I have an uncle called Brian!! I'm sure you will get all the answers to your questions, everyone here to help and very friendly. Wishing you the very best of luck in the future.

Enjoy BYC and all the chicken chat :frow

Hi Yorkshire Coop!

Thanks for the warm welcome! Brian is in fact named after my uncle......Brian!!! All his ladies are named after various Auntie's. We have goats that are named after our Grannies, my Mum often jokes that she is waiting for the animal that turns up named after her!!! Thanks again for the friendly welcome

Welcome to Backyard chickens. Sounds like Brian found himself a great home. Have your visited the Learning Center? It should answer most of your questions. For sick birds post in detail at "emergencies, diseases, injuries, cures," thread.

Thank you for the warm welcome! Brian has definitely fast become another spoilt member of the family - he has so much character and I love him to bits. Thanks for the advice about the Learning Center, I certainly still have so much to learn!

One of the things that makes raising poultry so interesting is that there is always something new to learn. I'd love to see a picture so I can show your rooster Brian to my husband Brian, lol.

Nice to hear you are enjoying the birds, thanks for joining us!

Let me introduce Brian to Brian!

He's a pretty big bird! I've done a little research and the closest resemblance I can find is a Malay rooster given his very long legs. He has a very loud, bassy crow which
he loves to show off, the other roosters in the neighbourhood are drowned out when he joins in!
