Borrowed a *Have A HEart Raccoon trap* Now what?

Yes its cruel to relocate raccoons. Reason laws are put it place to keep people from moving them to other areas. Plus a over population will cause starvation. Yes trap it, find someone who can kill it. Sorry but thats the best thing you can do.

Maybe someone on here could help, if near you.

Why do you want to trap it? It is illegal to relocate wild animals unless you have a license. If you do not have the heart to kill it, why are you going to trap it? You will train it to be trap-smart, and then have an even bigger problem or relocate that problem to someone else's yard. Is it that you don't have access to guns? Ethical issue with killing animals? Can't stand the sight of blood?
You would not be doing this raccoon any favors by relocating it. It will probably be dead within a couple days or weeks killed by starvation or by the existent population of predators. You could spread diseases to an uninfected population. You could catch diseases yourself by trying to move this creature. Relocation is illegal for a whole host of valid reasons.
Generally if you are going to trap an animal, you have an obligation to dispose of it. Call Animal Control, and maybe they will do it for you, but please do not consider relocation an option because it is not.

Do you have an animal rehab place around? Sometimes they will take medium to small animals and relocate them? Call animal control and ask if they will destroy it. I live in Mississippi and the laws are different. BUT if something is after your live stock you can destroy or relocate it. Good luck...A Raccoon can be a major pain and usually if you have one more are around.

Oh, I'm a wimp, I can eat meat when it comes from the store neatly wrapped.

I thought I would move it away (not near any houses) and let it return to *nature*, maybe make friends, raise a family or become a pet for Snow White or some wood elfin fairy..

I can't drown it because I most likely would get guilt ridden and start mouth to mouth.

All my friends are far left vegan liberals so they are no help.

Maybe I should just move?

Oh honey, I often joke that if the racoons would come in and clean my house while i sang and danced around in a fru fru dress they can stay. Sadly so far no racoons, squirrels, mice or bluejays have agreed.

I really think calling A/C to do it would be your best bet, do you have any crusty farmer relatives/neighbors who would do it for you?

Edit, you all know I love crusty old farmers, several in the family, and they're sweet enough to send me to the kitchen instead of the gutting table.

Here where I live in California, Animal Control will not kill the coons, but they are allowed to relocate them no further than 250' from where they were trapped. It doesn't do any good, because they come back. You would have to relocate the animals more than 10 miles to be effective. And then, they will most likely die due to lack of family, being in a strange environment, and in another animal's territory. So no matter what you do, the animal will die in the end. The most humane thing you can do is either shoot the animal, or build Fort Chicks so predators can't get in.

That's okay. You need to do what your heart tells you. Saddina is right...call animal control and they will deal with it properly. That's what they are paid to do and you won't have to worry.

I'm having raccoon problems too. Animal Control has been little help. The first one was hauled off, no problem. The second one was more problematic. It is illegal to trap wildlife here. I told him I was trying to trap feral cats (LEGAL). He threatened to release it back into my yard. I said absolutely not! After warning me that this was it, he took it away. Two days ago there was a coon fight outside my house with a very aggressive big one trying to kill a younger one. Fearing a rabid animal, I called AC to see if they would set some traps (AC officer said they will, on occasion do that). He has refused to return my call.

I am a police Sgt and if I get caught trapping illegally, I could lose my job. These coons killing my chickens is just a matter of time. Relocating is bad (and very illegal) because you are putting a rabies vector in someone elses back yard.

We have a TERRIBLE rabies problem here. I am in a real spot. I can't afford a pro trapper. They are $$$$$!!!!

when i lived in ca, animal control would even set traps for you, then dispose of animal. here in so. ill. they dont deal with skunks, so i doubt we could count on them to dispatch a racoon. hubby takes care of that, although, if i catch something after my critters, even i can shoot the rifle, my dad made sure of that early on
