Borrowed a *Have A HEart Raccoon trap* Now what?

Trap it. Humanely dispose of it in some way. Find some new friends who aren't brainwashed by the animal rights agenda. The fact is that coons aren't nice, cuddly kitties. They are smart, ruthless killers that carry rabies and a host of other diseases that neither you, nor your liberal vegan friends want to contract. Disney has done a lot of harm to the attitudes of people who have had absolutely no experience in the real world. When people actually get chickens, and have problems like yours, the real world smacks them in the face, and you wind up with ethical problems like you are experiencing. Good luck, whatever you decide.

I think chickie'll be ok, she's got the A/C number and where she is, they'll go out for it. Makes me think though, she's near a large state park, maybe someone decided she lives "middle of nowhere" and took it up the mountain.

Another option would be a coni bear trap. this trap kills the animal as humanly as a head shot. Draw backs are it kills everything so if you chickens are loose, cat , dog. Plus hurt when you catch your self.

Yep.. I was out helping a buddy around his farm this past Friday and we discovered a raccoon in a trap he'd set in his sweetcorn. The guy's daughter had dangnear cut off his right index finger -- aka, the trigger finger -- the day before* so I got to do the honors.

They look all sad and cute and helpless until you get close, at which point they make it patently obvious that they're vicious little maniacs.

* -- the finger choppin' is a long story, the moral of which is this:

1) No matter how bad your 5yo daughter wants to help chop weeds, don't hand her a pair of scissors, and 2) if you do break down and give her scissors, don't hold the weeds down for her as she cuts them.

It was bad...really, really bad. Like, your-stomach-turns-and-you-throw-up-a-tiny-bit-in-your-mouth-when-he-takes-off-the-bandage-and-says-"Look here what she done!" bad..

Actually, I am going to ask the chief (I'm a police Sgt) to allow me to get a rabies vaccination. Vets, AC officers and others get the immunization shot. We are having bad rabies problems here and the police are the first called. I think our dept should spring for the shot.

Who out there has had the shot? Is it awful? Does it have side effects?

The rabies shot is not nearly as bad as it used to be. It was a series of 21 shots deep in the stomach years ago, and it was extremely painful. Now, I think it's just around 6 - 8 shots, and only intramuscular. However, from several friends that have had them in the recent past, they are still quite painful. I guess the main side effect is that you won't die of rabies. Otherwise, I don't know of any side effects. There is also a (I believe it's a series) shot that will immunize you, much like those given to dogs and cats. I don't know much about that one.

Well spoke with AC this am. As of two days ago, they have stopped picking up any trapped Raccoons, etc...

back to square one.
