these are the Royal Wing BOSS seed from TSC bought in a 20 lb bag, several months ago...
I wanna do spouts..after soaking will spread out in trays uniformily.....
so does floating to the top mean anything.. I have sproute many times before other seeds and dont remember the sedds floating....
previously from this bag,,,, i sprouted three tray and later transferred to dirt in tray.. did okay. but noticed moths in last batch then.. I had been having fruit fly problems from produce from garden..... and grain wevils in my cupboard
I hd to remove the dirt trays with Boss greening sprouts outside.....
so are my Boss seeds vialble????
also I am soaking wheat, from bag of wheat hard winter I bough for my chickens.....
also I am soaking bought Organic new.. speckled peas, organic spouting buckwheat seeds...
and some beans from sprouting bought a while back and still had. so I have five jars a going....
wish I had BOUGHT RADISH ETC......
I HAVE LOTSOF GARDEN SEEDS but not sure if they contain a fungicicde... The packages dont say/////
Now can I sprout my Limas and Ky Wonder green bean seeds that dried out from the pods I grew this year.. are they spoutable for eating and making fodder
I have had spouting lids etc for years.....
but just recently wanted to obtain trays to make fodder for my Chickens....
I did grow in the fall under frames and hardware cloth winter wheat in their Runs.....they loved that
will MIlo and millet work??
tried some old store bought blackeyed peas and another ones.. but they jut soured
I dont havea mesh, but have landscape fabric....
so is i just best to grow the seed in the trays w/ o a medium?????
will be going to big town Monday
but dont know if they carry the 10 by 10 black trays.....
only have several bigger ones with the lear dome cover.

As for your floating BOSS, see what happens. I've generally had a few floaters and after a 24 hour soak, many of them would sink. I would just rinse/sprout as normal and never really paid much attention to which ones sprouted and which didn't. You could also crack open some of the floaters and see if it looks like a normal seed or if it has been compromised in some way.

Also, since you said the BOSS bag was several months old, if it has not been stored in a cool, dark and dry location, they may have been degrading. It also depends upon the climate of your location...if you are in hot/humid locale or cold/dry or hot/dry. Humidity and heat are less desirable for storage of foods, including grains and seeds. Properly stored seeds should be sproutable for at least a year, possibly longer.

Do not sprout bean seeds for chickens. Kidney beans are toxic if not cooked. I'm guessing that other beans in the same family may be as well. I would not sprout garden seeds with the intent of giving the sprouts to the chickens to eat. If you want to grow the seeds into plants, then let the chickens eat the plants, that's an other thing. What was the purpose of putting the BOSS in soil? If you are growing sprouts for your birds, you don't need any soil. My BOSS float, and sprout just fine. Yes, you can try sprouting bird seed, but... if it has cracked corn or sunflower meat bits in it, i'd not bother as those items will encourage mold. How many birds are you sprouting for? I find that with my 16 chickens, that if I do a quart every other day or so, that's plenty.

that is what a lady did on you tube for sunflower seeds after a good bunch had "tails"

I tried it and it worked fine accept when weevils got in on the act.....
also a video on you tube for "Got Spouts" a company that is pretty popular showed both ways....
now there are several spouts like mung beans etc that are popular.....not sure if they are truly a real bean...or legume
years ago I mostly did alfalfa spouts for myself wanna try broccoli spouts.. bought a bottle of spouting broccoli seeds off the net..
they are expensive in those plastic clamshells to buy in the produce section....the actual spous... but so good to eat.....
thanks

I recently sprouted BOSS and during the initial soak they all were floating at the top of the water. I let them soak for 24 then dumped them in a tray and they sprouted fine.
