Now, I want to see this for myself....

Is it just plain laziness....are they afraid another chicken will take it while they shell it....or does the shell actually taste good to them?

...these are questions....

I keep my chicks fenced & cooped, but my neighbor free-ranges her Jersey Black Giants. They found the feeders I leave out for the local chukars and now I could thru 50lbs of wild bird seed a week! At least she shares her eggs with us until mine start laying. Bottom line, I think birds are birds and will eat any grass type seed.

I think they are afraid another chicken might take it!!! My roo, Hansel, is so good to his girls. Always quick to share a juicy buggy or some really nice grass....throw out the BOSS, however, and it is every chicken for him/herself. He will stomp their toes and shove them backward to make sure he gets as much as he can!!!

That makes a lot of sense to me...

BOSS with shells on is what we feed.

The feed store had a Black Friday special, 50lbs for $9.99. Got me 4 bags

Thanks y'all. We do have a choice here - something that rarely happens in ol' Podunk, Arkansas

- so I wanted to be sure the shells were okay.

Oh good... I've been wondering this, too, because I had a bunch with the shell on that the wild birds weren't eating. My chickens eventually eat them all, shell and all.

Good fiber...
