Boston Terrier Thread!!

All my dogs are calm at the vet. Shorty gets over excited when people visit for a short while, but than settles down. I wouldn't call her hyper, just animated at times. She's usually pretty calm as well. Boston's can be high energy, but it's not a hyper energy most times.

Yeah, Dorie is like that with visitors too. She's very excited to greet them and maybe brings them a toy but isn't what I'd call hyper. I'm guessing it's the owners and the lack of training. I don't put up with begging, yapping, or whining, so my dogs are calmer...maybe?

We don't get many visitors, so mine get excited when someone visits. They do calm down after a bit. It's definitely in the training. Teaching dogs to be calm, or to calm down is as important as anything else taught. Dogs getting enough exercise and mental stimulation every day helps too.

Dogs do feed off the energy of the household. We are a rowdy household at times because my Murphy(mostly french bulldog) has doggie ADHD. She riles everyone up with her craziness sometimes.

I have fostered a dozen Boston's and find there is a range of calm to active. Same everyday walk in the country, same food, same people. While I agree that some households create more chaos than others, there is also great deviation in breeding. Just as you can breed for physical beauty and health, you can breed for temperament and excitability.

So at Dorie's last vet visit the vet tech told me that Dorie is the calmest Boston they've ever had there. I've said this before, but I get this comment A LOT and I don't really understand because both of my Bostons were/are calm and quiet most of the time! I'm wondering if it has to do with the energy levels of the owners. I am very low energy. I sleep in and take naps and Dorie is usually right there with me. Is this why? I don't know how to feel about it..is it a good thing or a bad thing?

Gypsy has her spaz moments a couple times a day but she'll sleep 13 hours at night and naps a lot during the day so I'd say it's normal. maybe your vet sees a lot of puppies so she expects the puppy energy?

Where has this page been? I love Bostons. My current boy, Max, was rescued four years ago, the same week my Dad died. He has been my rock. I have three other dogs, but Max is my special boy.

So sorry to hear about your dad. My Bostons have helped me so much during hard times too. Other breeds just aren't the same.
