Boston Terriers - What I Should Know About Ethical Breeding

Do not assume what someone’s intentions are. Do you not have to start somewhere!? And the audacity to judge someone based on the only question they asked?? You had no clue that they were just asking because they could not find the question online. It’s quite rude to say they are backyard breeding JUST because they couldn’t find the answer to the question online. It’s like you can’t even ask a question without people being rude.
Thank you. I’m glad that at least one person isn’t jumping to conclusions about me. People need to look for the facts and ask questions before assuming stuff because it’s very rude. I know it’s controversial for all, but it’s rude to assume things BEFORE even asking me what our plan is. Listen before you speak. Thank you. I appreciate it Luna.

1st let me say, if you had come on and asked how to get involved with dog shows and looking for a good breeder to learn from, my answer would be so different.

You DON'T breed a dog with Cherry eye... which correctly named is Prolapse of the 3rd eyelid... it is Hereditary !
You don't breed a dog before the age of 2.5 either and any good breeder will breed every Other year. They breed for confirmation or trials not because they just like the dog, they want to better the standards..... Good breeders get maybe 5 litters out of the life of a bitchh... not how many can get per year

Yes this is controversial and I will not change my mind. Ignore me or what ever you want but I won't back down from my opinion since You asked for it.
You don't even Have a dog to breed ! So yes I am going to say it's purely for the fun of it and that is NOT a reason to breed.
You should have googled and did research online before going to a forum to ask peoples opinions. Or better yet asked your Vet.

Tell you what, you go and volunteer every week (8 hrs a day) for a year and get to go in the rooms when they have 'euthanasia day'. Or sit with the countless people at the animal hospital that have to have their dog put down because of bad breeding from someone that should have never had a litter. Or have a dog for 2-3 years and then it has hip dysplasia so bad you have to carry the dog outside several times a day. Let's not forget the foolish people that spend $1000+ on a mixed mutt aka a 'designer dog' and then have a vet bill of Thousands because of a poorly bred dog.... and they put the dog to sleep because they can't afford it. And it cost money to surrender a dog to the shelter so people just leave them on the side of the road or leashed to a fence. I've sat with countless animals during euthanasia because there was no owner to give it it's last love/hug/kisses.
I don't even want to tell you the real horror stories.

Yeah Don't get me started, I've seen it all and cried my eyes out over animal's that should never have been born and then had to suffer...

So just love the dog you have

Here’s my two cents. If you can change the title of your thread to something along the lines of “Boston Terriers- What should I know before breeding them”, then I think you will come across better as someone who is trying to learn rather than as someone who only wants to maximize puppy sales.

There are a lot of things you will need to learn, and making your first question about max litters per year colors people’s perception of your intentions. I actually think you have received some kind and helpful answers, which are very toned down for the types of responses this topic usually brings.

Good luck in your learning. The more you learn, the more you will adjust your goals. By the time you are ready to purchase a breeding female, you will be a more experienced “dog person”, and who knows? You might even discover a different breed with fewer genetic difficulties to work around. Or, if you are dedicated enough to this particular breed, maybe you will become the person who works to improve the overall health of the breed.

My daughter recently bought a French Bulldog puppy. One thing the breeder mentioned was he hoped she didn’t mind that he breeds for a slightly longer muzzle. Because his goal was to not over exaggerate the pushed-in look. It was nice to hear of a breeder caring about the future of this brachycephalic breed.

Anyway, if you aren’t able to change the title of your thread, maybe you can ask a moderator to help you.

I completely understand your point. Trust me, I had a dog that had hip displaysia and we had to take him out multiple times a day. It was very sad. We had to go through the pain of putting him down. I’m not totally uneducated about the horror of having to be with an animal as they breathe their last breath. And with Bostons, we would be responsible breeders. We would be breeding for them to have longer noses because the smashed in ones are cruel. You assuming that we are breeding for the fun of it is ridiculous, putting words in my mouth that aren’t even their. Obviously I know not to breed a dog with cherry eye. I won’t change my mind of this controversial topic either. Like I said, I didn’t find any research on what amount of litters for a Boston Terrier would be good a year, so again, I am saying that I came to this forum to ask people for their opinion. Do I have to go from totally uneducated to the most professionally trained veterinarian in the world? No. Everyone has to start somewhere so I’m starting with this question which I could not find. And no, I am not totally uneducated about Bostons. I know what their like, the responsibility of caring for a Boston, certain issues that may arise. Yes I know many dogs end up in the shelter, but if you are screening potential buyers, and telling the buyers that at any point if you can’t care for your dog any longer and need to get rid of them, bring them BACK to us. We would offer a lifetime support if they are going to get rid of their Boston. That way we wouldn’t have dogs ending up in shelters. I know the pain of having to stay with an animal until their last breathe whether it be a dog, a cat, rabbits, even fish for goodness sakes. I’ve had to experience it and its not pretty.

I get why you feel strongly about this, because of the experiences you’ve had and the countless irresponsible people you’ve seen treat animals. But to assume that I’m thinking a certain way or will do something a certain way doesn’t mean that’s going to happen. You should ask questions and listen before assuming something about me. Just because you’ve gone through all this doesn’t mean you need to assume that I will be like a lot of other people and be a backyard breeder. You know, I’m human too and need to be treated good too. You treat animals super well so why not me? I’m a living being as well. I understand it’s controversial and all but it is not going to change my mind.

Thank you for your thoughts. I shall keep them in mind. We can agree to disagree and leave it at that. I respect your thoughts and fully support people to adopt animals out of the shelter. I do not respect those that breed animals just for quantity, breed just for fun, breed just for money, breed just because they want to see puppies and don’t care where they end up. We can agree on that at least and can leave it on where we agree. Thank you.

Thank you for your very calm response. I really appreciate it. Yes, everyone on here has been helpful in their own unique ways and I’ve gleaned a few tips from it.

Yes, the thread may seem like it’s for maximizing litters. But that wasn’t my intention. I was trying to see how many a year would be humane. So sorry to anyone who thought that was my intention. I’m not quite sure how to change the title, do you know how?

I’m glad to hear that a breeder of that Frenchie is trying to lengthen the nose. Thank you very much for your input! I appreciate it a lot!

Also, I want to thank you for your time and input. I hope I didn’t come off rude or anything. I apologize if that’s what it seemed.

Thank you for the work you do for shelters.
