Boxer - serious laceration - HELP!

the vet may perscribe a refill of his meds...and you wont have to bring him in...i'd call the vet and ask him?....Wendy

If you can get Provon soap (piercing shops and medical supply shops have it) I would clean the wound with it 2-3 times a day, its antimicrobial.
I would also do non-iodized sea salt soaks (you can hold a soaked cotton ball to the wound) 2-3 times a day as well for about 10 mins at a time or as long as he will let you. (Use 1/8th a tsp to 8 oz warm water.) Rinse well after wards.
If you decided to use an antibiotic oinment use it sparingly too much can actually harbour bactieria in the wound, which you don't want.
Try to get some Fish Flex (cephalexin-its a great antibiotic) http://www.healthypets.com/fiflc2530ta.html Its the same thing you get from a vets office BUT if you buy it for fish you don't need a prescription

Give a 250 mg capsule 2 times a day for 7-10 days.

He's on Cephalexin. I've been giving him 500 mg 2x daily since we got him home last Saturday.

I'll have to call the vet in the AM, but they're not known for "working" with people. Unfortunately, we're short on vets around here, we're very rural, and while they are the best vet around, they've kinda lost their people touch, if you know what I mean...

Please don't use peroxide, it kills healthy tissue as well. THis is the BEST product I use it on ALL animal wounds. http://www.underwoodhorsemedicine.com/ This stuff SAVED a rescue/rehab. Put it in a spray bottle and shake well, spray on and while its wet, coat it in Wonder Dust. Its also a horse type wound dressing. DO not wrap and do not clean it out. THe Underwood makes its own coating an falls off and leaves the clean wound for the enxt day. JMO, those stitches need to come out NOW! They are hindering healing its a mess. GOodluck and feel free to PM me if I can help any. Kari

I figured the vet would have him on Cephalexin, its a GREAT antibiotic and somethign that is really helpful if you can keep onhand. Its probably cheaper thru the net than the vet though (at least from mine and he IS cheap).
If your vet for some bizarre reason won't work with you I would still do the best you can with what you've got, or can get. Its insane that he is charging you for follow up visits. Anytime my vet has to do any follow up care there is no charge unless its for meds. We recently had to have Pokey Joe in the 'hospital' for a week and it was less than $200. I swear some vets really seem to be in it for the $$$.

Here's a link to another site that carries most antibiotics, Fish Flex is cephalexin (obviously), Fish Mox is amoxicillin etc etc: http://www.revivalanimal.com/store/c/631-Medications.aspx?pi=3&sort=

Well, ours would be in it for the money, I guess, compared to what yours charges. Our Boxer was in overnight, and we were in over $300.

The bandages changes were $27 each, and the e-collar we had to buy because he wouldn't stop chewing was $18. The appointment for stitches out will be covered, but anything other, they'll charge an office visit, and that's $27, IF they'll let you off for a brief.

I could smack my husband for having him off on the woods, LOL. He got sliced on something out there, and came back lame, bleeding everywhere.

Hopefully I can begin to get the infection worked out.
