My guess is they are both gals.

The pointy feathers just in front of the tails, if they had them or were starting to come in, would be a rooster type feather (not so much the actual tail feathers)

Oh wow, thank you Chickgirl6 for the photo! My speckled sussex definitely doesn't have a comb that big, so maybe it is a girl after all. It definitely helps to have something for comparison.
