No, they are NOT poisonous. NO, nada, zero, zilch. No. Your grandpa has confused them with copperheads or massasagas or something. They are poisonous. Just google the poisonous snakes in Alaska, view the pics, and avoid those. THERE ARE NO SNAKES IN ALASKA!!!! BESIDES THE SNOW SNAKE WHICH IS SNOW!
Rule of thumb, if it has a pointy head/nose its likely venomous. IF its a rounded head/nose, its not. If in doubt, just don't let it bite you. I handle poisonous snakes a lot, and I've never been bitten. Just don't freak them out. Move slow, handle with care, never grab one in the middle, grab behind the head, or better with a stick longer than the snake. I have watched too many snake showsand sadly ive never caught a poisonous snake, well any snake other then gartner
