It is for both hybrid-vigor and for easy sexing at birth.

When doing a black sex-link cross, the females will be born without spots and black, while the males are born WITH spots. The females will be all black with some red when grown, and the males will have a less distinct barring pattern that is flecked with black feathers and/or red feathers.

so if my barred rock wannabe was a sex link then it would have red feathers mixed in right, i am sure it does not so what does that make it?

Being that a sex-link has no standard, it may or may NOT have red feathers in it.

Having a red male (RIR or NHR) as a father gives it more of a chance of having red feathers than if the parent were a black, white or barred bird.

Being that your male is so "mussed" up in the barring department and that his legs are not as yellow as a true Barred Rock should be, I'm guessing that he is a black sex-link male.

I think your chicken looks exactly like a barred rock - the barring may not be well defined because he is a hatchery bird, but as for his legs not being as yellow - Barred Rock hatchery chickens frequently have a dark wash down the front of their legs - especially the females.

Here's some info on sexing barred rock chicks:

This photo is of my barred rock pullets at age 7-8 weeks ( you can see the dark on their legs).

Notice the size/color of her comb and wattles?

It's a shame that the utility barred rocks do not have better coloration than they do. They need to start calling them by a different name if they are going to deviate that far from the standard. What a shame.
