Brahma 'Baby' 8 Months WITH feathers.UPDATE

Well here she is at 16 weeks.

The few feathers that she had (3) fell out, just leaving her with 4 upturned feathers on her right side. She cannot fly, of course.

There are a few normal(ish) feathers on her head and neck as before, but the feathers on the back remain just as they were.

Otherwise she seems completely fine... but looks like a scarecrow.

Don't think she'll win any "Best Looking Hen" prizes....

THATS 16 WEEKS????? that cannot be 16 weeks.. she has to have more feathers then that!!! thats 4 months old!!! omg!!!

Yep....over a pound in weight, tall and strong.....but feathers like a baby!

I can only assume that she has some kind of spontaneous feather mutation as her parents are both fully and normally feathered. I had initially thought that she was a cockerel as they can be a bit slow to feather up in Brahmas, but this is way out of the norm, and the feather pattern on the head and neck says pullet. The few slightly more normal feathers are, in fact, highly abnormal as they are spoon shaped and curve upwards. She is not as a result of in-breeding.

The other chicks which hatched at the same time all have normal feathers.

Apart from the odd feathers she seems to be fine...claws, beak, eyes etc. She eats very well, is active and seems to behave normally.

As winters here are cold and wet she will need both a waterproof and a fleecy vest for winter!

Wow! And I thought my Nan was behind in feather development. Hope your lady stays a lady, mine ended up a roo. (see thread below) She's quite pretty though. Maybe she wanted to be a silkie?
I wish we lived closer, Ferdy needs a coop mate to call his own. His friends will be leaving him soon. She would be perfect! Ha ha ha.

15 minutes later......I just looked back at your older post on this bird. I wonder if the defect may have something to do with the blue genetics as ferdiNANd is Red Blue Laced Wyandotte and yours is a Blue too. Hmmm..Ferdy has the spoon shaped feathers too, though just a few and they are not upturned.

Atleast she has her down feathers.

Maybe a Silkie snuck in with her momma when you were not looking. Kinda like Imp sneaking around Gritsar's Brahma girls.
