I'm interested in hearing from other chicken keepers who have Brahmas.

I read that Brahmas typically live for 5 to 8 years, however my experience is slightly different.

Would any Brahma keepers provide insight into the age of passing of their Brahma hens and cock birds.

Also, if known, the cause of death.

Thanks in advance

Keith

Would help to know the circumstance of your Brahmas demise.
Lifespan has much more to do with diet, housing, etc than breed alone.

Oh, and... Welcome to BYC! @keithnw
Where in this world are you located?
Climate, and time of year, is almost always a factor.

I'm guessing my experience will not be very helpful, but here it is:

--had Brahmas in the USA, quite a few years ago

--age at death ranged from 8 weeks to over 2 years (I got some as adults, so was not entirely sure of their age. I do not have any reason to think they were older than 3-5 years).

--cause of death was that I killed & butchered them. They were always in good health at that time, so I have no idea how much longer they could otherwise have lived. As long as they hatched and made it through the first week of life, I do not think any of them died of any other cause.

My Brahma's are young still
But I have done a lot of research and it says Light brahmas live 7-8 years

My first chick purchase was light brahmas 12 years ago. They started to pass after about 6 years. I had a amazing rooster who lived to about 10 and have two in the coop from the original batch who are now twelve and believe it or not, I am still getting eggs from. Great mothers I had one hen who raised my day old blue Cochins. I had made a decision not to get any more chickens a few years back, this year decided that yes I do want chickens I have 10 one month old blue Cochins ( actually nine blue Cochins and a blue Polish but that’s a whole other story and a whole other thread 😂) and just received this week seven day old silver laced Cochin’s.
So I guess an answer to your question they can live a good long time

What do you feed? I also have Brahmas and the amount of info out there is dizzying! It makes sense that diet will influence lifespan.

I feed Purina crumbles. 5 seed scratch, I always have a flock block in coop. During the summer veggies from my garden and in the winter I give kitchen scraps and mealworms for extra protein.
